By The Numbers: Leon Edwards

Leon Edwards can enjoy the view, at least for a little while longer.

The Team Renegade star completed his long climb to the top of the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight mountain when he knocked out Kamaru Usman with a fifth-round head kick and reached the 170-pound summit in the UFC 278 headliner on Aug. 20. Edwards has not tasted defeat in nearly seven years—a remarkable run that has seen him go 10-0 with one no contest across his past 11 appearances. Now comes the difficult part: proving he has staying power as a marked man.

As Edwards awaits word on his first title defense from UFC matchmakers, a look at some of the numbers that have accompanied him to this point:

31: Years of age for Edwards, who was born on Aug. 25, 1991 in Kingston, Jamaica—more than 4,600 miles from where he now trains and resides in England.

7: Edwards victories by knockout or technical knockout, accounting for 35% of his career total (20). His list of UFC victims: Usman, Peter Sobotta and Seth Baczynski. Edwards holds three other victories by submission (15%) and 10 more by decision (50%).

8: Seconds needed for Edwards to put away Baczynski with punches at UFC Fight Night 64 on April 11, 2015. More than seven years later, it remains his fastest finish to date.

92: Significant strikes landed by Edwards in his five-round unanimous decision over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in their UFC on ESPN 4 main event in 2019. It established a high-water mark for “Rocky” that stands to this day.

1: Disqualification loss on the Edwards resume. He was penalized for an illegal knee strike against Delroy McDowell in the third round of their encounter under the Fight UK MMA banner in February 2012.

22: Takedowns completed by Edwards as a UFC welterweight, placing him seventh on the promotion’s active list at 170 pounds. He trails only Colby Covington (67), Usman (55), Neil Magny (53), Belal Muhammad (34), Matt Brown (31) and Court McGee (24).

56: Rounds completed by Edwards as a professional mixed martial artist. He has gone the distance on 12 different occasions and carries a 10-2 record in those bouts.

4: Organizations for which Edwards has plied his mixed martial arts trade. In addition to his 12-2 mark in the UFC, he has gone 5-0 in the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts, 2-1 in Fight UK MMA and 1-0 in Strength and Honour.

100,000: Dollars in post-fight bonuses banked by Edwards across his 15 appearances in the UFC. He has been awarded “Performance of the Night” twice.

.860: Cumulative winning percentage between the three men—Usman, McDowell and Claudio Silva—who have beaten Edwards. They boast a combined record of 37-6.
