By the Numbers: UFC 157

The first bout to feature women inside the Octagon did not lack for drama, but in the end, Ronda Rousey was still able to do what she does best. After surviving a serious neck-crank attempt from Liz Carmouche early in the opening frame of the UFC 157 main event on Saturday night, Rousey went to work, securing her patented armbar 4:39 into the first round of the 135-pound title tilt.

While Rousey earned the victory and remains the top female talent in the sport today, Carmouche proved that she undoubtedly belongs in the Octagon after giving the champion the toughest test of her career to date. Additionally, Lyoto Machida staked his claim to another 205-pound title shot with a hard-fought split-verdict over Dan Henderson. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 157, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.

10: First-round finishes via armbar – including three amateur fights – for Rousey, who tapped Carmouche with the hold 4:39 into the opening frame, the longest bout of the judoka’s MMA career. Only Carmouche and Miesha Tate, who was submitted by Rousey 4:27 into the first round at a Strikeforce event last March, have lasted longer than a minute against “Rowdy.”

.833: Finishing percentage on submission attempts for Rousey, who has failed to elicit a tapout just once – her first armbar attempt versus Miesha Tate -- in six attempts during her five-bout tenure under the Zuffa banner.

41: Total strikes landed by Rousey against Carmouche. Rousey landed 41 of her 50 total strikes attempted, while Carmouche landed 22 of 24.

19: Total significant strikes landed by Rousey in one UFC and four Strikeforce bouts combined. The California native landed seven significant strikes against Carmouche – her career high of eight came against Tate.

1: Submission attempted by Carmouche, who attempted a neck crank from Rousey’s back early in the first frame. Carmouche is the first opponent to attempt a submission against Rousey.

7: Significant strikes by which Machida outlanded Henderson in their closely contested light heavyweight bout. Henderson outlanded the former UFC champion 12 to 10 in round one, while “The Dragon” had the edge in rounds two (11 to 6) and three (6 to 2).

18: Head strikes landed by Machida. By comparison, Henderson landed nine head strikes in the light heavyweight bout.

26: Advantage in total strikes for Henderson, who secured his lone takedown of the fight in round three and held a 34-to-7 edge in total strikes in the bout’s final five minutes. Henderson also held a 33-to-5 advantage in ground strikes landed.

Faber's submission was spectacular.
16: Leg strikes landed by Henderson. By comparison, Machida landed one leg strike.

6-0: Urijah Faber’s record in non-title bouts since 2009. That ledger includes wins over Jens Pulver, Raphael Assuncao, Takeya Mizugaki, Eddie Wineland, Brian Bowles and Ivan Menjivar. “The California Kid” is 0-4 in championship contests over that same timeframe.

166: Significant strikes landed by Court McGee in his unanimous decision victory over Josh Neer. “The Crusher” outlanded Neer by 59 significant strikes in round one and by 103 significant strikes overall. McGee attacked with more volume throughout the fight, throwing 368 total strikes to Neer’s 160.

3,046: Days since Robbie Lawler’s last Octagon appearance, a submission defeat to Evan Tanner at UFC 50 in 2004. Lawler returned with a bang, stopping Josh Koscheck with punches 3:57 into the opening round of their welterweight conflict.

6.5: Average significant strikes landed by Lawler in his last four victories, each of which came by first-round knockout or technical knockout.

5: Takedowns landed, in eight attempts, by Brendan Schaub in his unanimous decision win over Strikeforce veteran Lavar Johnson, one more takedown than “The Hybrid” had landed in his seven previous UFC appearances combined.

23: Professional fights involving Johnson that did not go to the judges’ scorecards prior to his three-round defeat at the hands of Schaub in his 24th bout.

7: Career victories via choke for “The Ultimate Fighter 15” alumnus Michael Chiesa following his second-round rear-naked choke triumph over Anton Kuivanen. Five of Chiesa’s wins have come via rear-naked choke.

202: Combined significant strikes landed by Dennis Bermudez (120) and Matt Grice (82) in their rollicking featherweight clash. Bermudez outlanded his opponent 66 to 23 in significant strikes and 98 to 25 overall – including one knockdown – in a dominant third round.

1: Takedown landed in 21 combined attempts for Bermudez (0 for 9) and Grice (1 for 12).

13: Bouts that have gone the distance in the UFC career of Sam Stout, tying him with Jon Fitch for most decisions in promotion history. Stout is 7-6 in those fights after earning a split verdict against Caros Fodor.
