CageWarriors: Kelly, O’Toole Claim Victories

by Matthew Freeman

NOTTINGHAM, July 21 -- The third instalment of the CageWarriors: Enter The Rough House series featured a number of great domestic match ups.

The main event saw the ever charismatic Sami Berik (Pictures) take on the undefeated Wolfslair Academy fighter Paul Kelly in a welterweight contest. Kelly, who had dropped down from middleweight to take the fight, clearly looked the bigger man as both came out swinging. Berik attempted a big over hand right but Kelly was quicker to the punch, dropping his opponent to the mat.

Kelly seized his opportunity against the dazed Team Bloodline fighter and pounced on Berik, unloading a torrent of hammerfists which allowed him to secure mount position. Continuing to strike, Kelly forced Berik to give up his back from where he sunk in hooks and then the rear naked choke to win by submission at 1:27 of round one.

In the fight of the night, UFR Fight Team's Mark O'Toole got back to winning ways against tough Christian Smith in a display of everything mixed martial arts encompasses. Using his jab to good effect, O'Toole closed the distance to clinch and throw short upper cuts early on. After exchanging leg kicks, O'Toole landed a solid right hand, stunning Smith and forcing him to look for a takedown. The Irishman tried to capitalize on his advantage, but Smith showed great fitness to recover and land knees from the clinch.

After a referee restart, Smith rushed his opponent with punches but O'Toole used his footwork to score with a heavy combination of blows, dropping Smith, who tried to recover only to be knocked down a second time. Sensing the win, O'Toole dove in with a flurry of hammerfists but Smith had enough composure in the scramble to take top position. Not wanting to let Smith recover, O'Toole secured an armbar to get the submission win at 3:08 of the opening period.

Andre Winner (Pictures) racked up another decision victory, this time over Welshman Daniel Thomas in a very technical fight. Using his crisp boxing skills, Winner chipped away at Thomas in the stand up and stuffed every attempt at a takedown. The first round displayed a pattern of Winner jabbing before Thomas moved in to clinch to strike with uppercuts as his opponent threw knees.

The second frame continued the action though Winner started to dominate, and when the fight did go to the ground he used his strength to stay on top and punish his opponent with body shots and elbows. In the final five minutes, Winner's fitness seemed to pay off as he continued to land jabs and command the clinch game with knees to take the unanimous decision.

Matt Thorpe destroyed his Romanian opponent Vasile Doczi in the first round of a one sided beatdown. Using his height and reach advantages to full effect, Thorpe unleashed an opening salvo that dropped Doczi before striking from the guard to the body and head, forcing his opponent to submit less than two minutes into the first stage.

Team Rough House fighter and rising UK welterweight Jim Wallhead (Pictures) defeated Soli Klichko (Pictures) with relative ease. Taking Clichko down early and stacking him into the cage to limit his submission skills, Wallhead distracted his opponent with strikes before working into side-control and looking for a Kimura. Clichko managed to escape, but this only earned him the opportunity to eat more punishment before Wallhead sunk an arm-triangle choke for the win at 2:52 of round one.

Brazilian and Wolfslair Academy fighter Henrique Nogueria took on the very tough Lee Austin in a back-and-forth middleweight match. Nogueria initiated the action by rushing across the cage, but Austin remained composed, landing a number of nasty hooks that dropped the Brazilian and left him distinctly dazed. Austin took Nogueria's back and began to work for the rear naked choke before mounting his opponent and looking to strike. However, Nogueria recovered and regained his feet to secure his own takedown where he dropped some vicious elbows. Austin exploded onto his feet but Nogueria pulled guard and sunk in a guillotine choke for the win in just 3:19.

In another technical stand up fight, Aaron Blackwell (Pictures) took a unanimous decision over Manchester's Ashley Smith. With both men looking cautious, the first round was a series of single strikes with Blackwell landing relentless leg kicks and a picture perfect spinning back kick to the body of his clearly frustrated opponent. Smith looked to take the fight to the mat in the second but Blackwell scrambled well.

Both came out aggressively in the third, looking for the win with Blackwell landing some nice combinations and Smith stalking him with wild strikes. Getting the takedown, After securing the takedown, Smith, unable to mount an attack, allowed Blackwell to latch onto his arm. Although he tried to slam his way out of the submission his attempts were in vain.

Lee Livingstone (Pictures) took his record to 2-0 against Kevin Reed. Livingstone wasted no time finding his range with leg kicks before shooting in for a double leg takedown that landed him in side-mount. Reed powered up to his feet but Livingstone worked a guillotine and then a triangle choke. Reed escaped and stacked Livingstone against the cage only for Lee to regain his feet and score another takedown and Reed to work for a guillotine. The escaping Livingstone dropped a number of punches and elbows to score heavily at the end of the round.

Coming out for the second, Reed looked gassed and Livingstone pounced, using the Muay Thai clinch to throw three successive knees to drop Reed and secure the TKO win at 1:29 of the second.

In a middleweight contest, Dave Bownds and Rob Cooper went head to head. Cooper took the fight down early, but Brownds reversed the position and began striking. Cooper tried to roll out but Brownds controlled position, taking Coopers back and flattening him out before grounding and pounding his way to victory at 3:40 of the first stanza.
