Cooper Cuts Von Flue

VISALIA, Calif., Dec 1 -- Purecombat brought its first event to the Visalia Convention Center Saturday for a nine-bout card headlined by Jason Von Flue (Pictures).

In mixed martial arts things do not always work how they are supposed to. Von Flue was going to become the face of the Central California Valley promotion and put them on the map. Apparently no one clued in Brett Cooper (Pictures), who played the role of spoiler.

Cooper used some crisp strikes to put Von Flue on his heels and caught him over the top of his right eye with a punch that caused a deep gash. It was clear Von Flue had trouble seeing as he looked at referee Dan Snell at one point and almost threw a punch at the official thinking he was his opponent.

Von Flue never gave up even with his limited visibility.

In round two the cutman's work was no help and both fighters were bloody from the cut. The fighters did go to the ground, where Von Flue is more comfortable. The UFC veteran was able to grab a leg but before Von Flue could do anything with it Cooper was able to slip out because of all the blood.

Von Flue, with just one good eye, was basically a target. Cooper caught him with a big uppercut to end the fight and take home the welterweight belt.

In a bout that had "old style" UFC written all over it, 285 pound Jimmy Ambriz (Pictures) took on 209 pound Anthony Ruiz (Pictures), who was coming off his big win over Bobby Southworth (Pictures) two weeks ago.

Ruiz, looking confident after recent success, fended off the much bigger and stronger Ambriz's first few flurries. It seemed like Ruiz's game plan was to avoid Ambriz by using his jab and waiting for the moment that the bigger fighter would tire.

That plan worked out great after about the two-minute mark.

Ambriz began to fatigue and Ruiz took over with a big right that dropped the super heavyweight to one knee. He followed up with a few more combinations, which made Ambriz verbally submit.

The fight of the night went to John Reedy versus Dominique "Fallen Angel" Robinson. Reedy opened with a nice left high kick that connected. Most of the first round saw Reedy trying to take Robinson down, which he succeeded in doing a few times. But Robinson was always able to get back up.

In round two, Robinson landed a few knees and knocked Reedy down. But Reedy was also able to stand again and scored a big slam to take the round. The third period was a lot like the first as Reedy landed takedowns but Robinson stood, though he was unable to capitalize on much offense as he was battling the takedown all fight.

Paul Mince (Pictures) always seems like he has some place to go. Fighting against the tough Rolando Torres (Pictures) was no different as the hard-hitting Bakersfield, Calif., fighter came out and wasted no time at all. Torres ate a big right and was basically out as he hit the canvas. Mince followed him down and wanted to make sure he did not try to get backup. The fight ended in 37 seconds.

Eric Mychal Clark (Pictures) made quick work of Ben Davis (Pictures) starting the fight off with a "Superman" punch and then a combo that knocked Davis to the ground. Clark followed him down, making the referee stop the fight at 1:14 of round one.

Local boy Mario Rivera (Pictures) was able to get the nod by unanimous decision over Damian Douglas, a Gracie jiu-jitsu fighter, showed off some standup and a few submission attempts. Yet was eventually overpowered by Rivera to get the win.

Ray Moroyoqui showed some good ground-and-pound before catching Francisco Loredo (Pictures) and putting the fighter in a bad situation that only the referee could get him out of at 2:49 of the opening round.

Dan Pinedo landed the big right hand off the bat, basically stopping Joe Corona at 1:06 of the first period.

Eli Moreno (Pictures) took the opening fight of the night over Scott Ball. Starting the fight off with a nice takedown, Moreno followed up with some rights and lefts and three in a big knee that caused the referee to step in and end the fight at 2:15 of round one.
