Down near the north end of the world famous Las Vegas Strip tonight, upstart mixed martial arts organization IFO will promote its second Steele Cage event in the city of sin.
After delivering a solid debut back in June, the IFO hopes to gather in more fans; and if tonight's card is any indication of things to come, the public should be lining up in droves to check it out. The doors open at 6 PM inside the Riviera Hotel and Casino.
Saturday's IFO card is filled with experienced veterans of the fight game, many of whom have made names for themselves inside the world's premiere organizations in the UFC and PRIDE. The evening's main event is the IFO light heavyweight title fight between
Travis Wiuff (Pictures) (44-11) and
Sean Salmon (Pictures) (11-3), a fight with relative do-or-die circumstances for both competitors.
"This is a tough matchup," Wiuff said at the pre-fight press conference Friday afternoon. "He's a good wrestler and that's what my background is. The advantage I have is my size. It's a hard cut for me to make weight. Another advantage I have is that Sean's taking the fight on short notice."
Wiuff's opponent also understands the importance of the fight and knows he must deliver a victory.
"Travis is really tough and I'm excited to fight someone with his ability," Salmon stated. "Both Travis and I are at points in our careers where losing isn't an option. We're two good fighters who both need to put together a string of wins."
The card's co-main event is an intriguing showdown between promising lightweight
Zach George (Pictures) (9-1) and dependable submission specialist
Chris Mickle (22-9-1). George is hoping to bounce back from a "No Contest" in his last bout while Mickle has won four consecutive battles.
"He isn't going to handle my pressure or my power," George declared. "I feel that my wrestling is better and my kickboxing is better, so it doesn't matter if we're standing or on the ground."
Mickle, naturally, disagreed with George's preamble.
"I don't think he can go one round with me, let alone five," said Mickle. "I'm going to pound him until I break his will."
Rich Clementi (Pictures) (24-12-1), a UFC veteran and one of the stars of the fourth season of the wildly popular reality series
The Ultimate Fighter, is looking to resume his fighting career after taking some time off due to some personal issues. He is expecting to utilize his opportunity to fight in the IFO to rekindle his fighting spirit. He is set to face off against
Kyle Gibbons (5-1).
"I wanted this fight because I'm used to fighting every month and haven't been able to do so recently," Clementi said after the presser. "This is my last fight at 170. Then I'm going back down to 155 where I've fought some of the top 155 pounders such as
Yves Edwards (Pictures),
Din Thomas (Pictures) and
Caol Uno (Pictures). I put my training on the backburner last year as I was opening my tanning salon (2 B Tan) and launching No Love Entertainment which promotes MMA shows in Louisiana."
Another featured bout of the evening features another UFC vet in
Justin Levens (Pictures) (9-6), but the colorful Levens was mute. The once-promising Californian has dropped three in a row and six of his last eight bouts after opening his career 7-0. Levens, who is scheduled to face Nate James (3-3), has recently locked horns with opponents inside the quite popular IFL ring and desperately needs a win tonight.
Levens was unavailable for comment in the weeks leading up to his contest against Clementi and didn't speak to the media during or after the pre-fight press conference.
MMA new-comer
Eric Thompson (1-1) was also on hand to talk about his middleweight contest with
Evan Landry (2-0), though he was man of few words.
"After 10 to 12 seconds he'll be on the ground," Thompson promised. "I'm going to knock his face off."
Welterweight Tyle Stinson (5-2) was a man of even fewer words, simply declaring that he is "going to throw some hands" when he fights his opponent,
Ken Jackson (3-2).
Rounding out the card is a light heavyweight match between
Ryan Bader (3-0) and Rafeal Real (4-7), a featherweight contest between
Matt Williams (6-2) and
Dennis Davis (Pictures) (10-6) and finally, a middleweight showdown that pits CB Dallaway (3-0) against
Joe Bunch (7-1).
