LAS VEGAS -- Though they lacked in number, a few hundred fans certainly made up for it in volume Saturday during the first Las Vegas Combat Championships at the Alexis Park Resort.
Welterweight
Steve Gable (Pictures) improved to 2-0 by scorching Brazilian
Vitor Pimenta (Pictures) in under one minute. Gable changed levels seconds into the contest and brought his jiu-jitsu counterpart to the canvas. Moments after a scramble, Gable quickly seized Pimenta's back and locked in a rear-naked choke.
The fight appeared to be over just 15 seconds in, but Pimenta (2-2) defended well and almost escaped the choke. However, once Gable changed his grip and duped Pimenta into thinking he was letting go, he sunk in the choke deeper to force a tapout at 55 seconds.
Lightweight Scottie Ayres missed weight by several pounds on Friday but the late replacement from Houston vowed he'd make up for the weigh-in debacle. However, he ran into a buzz saw named Jonathan "JJ" Mix (1-2) and was choked nearly unconscious in just 13 seconds. Ayres (0-3) shot in for a single leg but slipped right into a guillotine. Ayres (0-3) couldn't escape and had no choice but to tap out.
Ian Olmaza (1-0) and
Walter Pinto (1-1) waged a classic bantamweight battle for six minutes but it was Olmaza's relentless pressure that was the deciding factor. Olmaza scored a takedown and got Pinto's back during a scramble. From there, he locked in the grapevines and pounded away until referee Steve Mazzagatti stopped it at 1:09 of the second.
Zac Ilarraza (1-0) stopped
Eddie Aguirre (Pictures) (0-1) at 4:57 of the first round in a special 160-pound matchup. Aguirre suffered an injury to his ribs, probably from the flying knee he absorbed moments before he was brought down, and had to be rescued by referee Kim Winslow.
Andre Garcia (2-2) scored an impressive second-round technical knockout over David Gomez (0-1), dominating from start to finish in their welterweight encounter. Garcia had Gomez trapped in a corner and began teeing off on his opponent until Gomez' Shark Tank corner threw in the towel at 2:06 of the second.
Welterweight Greg Contardo (1-0) was a little too much for Ben Kim (0-1), and scored a stoppage due to strikes at 1:00 of the second round. Contardo took the Korean fighter down on numerous occasions and Kim couldn't escape. Kim was eventually rescued by referee Winslow.
