Lehman Outpoints Meaders

By May 11, 2008
LANCASTER, Calif. -- Chaos in the Cage hosted eight fights Saturday at the well-attended Antelope Valley Fairgrounds. Young fighters filled the card for the most part, though one exception was main event fighter Eric Meaders (Pictures).

Meaders has been around for quite some time. Although he started his fight career in 1999, he had a six-year hiatus and didn't return to the sport until late last year. With only one victory since his return, there's no doubt he was looking for a big win Saturday night.

Unfortunately for him, Adam Lehman (Pictures) came to fight.

Lehman was the more effective striker early, forcing Meaders to drop to his back multiple times. Off his back, though, Meaders worked his jiu-jitsu and caught Lehman in an armbar and a solid triangle choke. Lehman would not tap, and instead he powered out of both submissions.

After losing a point for illegal knees and allowing Lehman to control the majority of the fight, it was do or die for Meaders in the last round. Lehman fought a smart fight, however, and didn't give Meaders the opportunity to finish. In the end, Lehman earned the nod from all three judges.

The match between Aaron Miller (Pictures) and Ben Gonzales was the only bout on the card pitting two fighters with winning records against each other. The fight started with Gonzales throwing a kick and moving forward aggressively with punches, which in turn got him taken down. Once the fight hit the mat, Miller dominated by quickly taking back control and flattening out Gonzales.

With referee Herb Dean (Pictures) yelling in his ear to improve his position, Gonzales worked back to guard and swept his opponent, but he was swept right back and mounted. From mount Miller rained down punches that forced a stoppage at 2:16 of the first round.

Despite locking up a triangle early in the fight, Daniel McWilliams (Pictures) was simply unable to finish Joe Stevenson-trained fighter Alex Reyes.

Slamming his way free from the triangle, Reyes found himself in an armbar but had no difficulty escaping it either. After gaining top control, Reyes punched his way to victory. McWilliams stopped fighting back, forcing referee Larry Landless (Pictures) to halt the bout just after the two-minute mark. With the win, Reyes improved his record to 2-2.

In other bouts, Miguel Esparza earned a unanimous decision over Phillip Golff (Pictures) in the only other fight on the card to go the full distance; Jason Meaders (Pictures) scored a second-round TKO of Hildred Oliney (Pictures); Ian Savage tapped out Johnny Huerta in the second round with an Americana; Andrew Jones made quick work of Javier Montoya, knocking him out in only 16 seconds; and Andrew Flores submitted Paul Karksy by rear-naked choke in the third round.
