VISALIA, Calif., Feb. 29 --
Scott Lighty (Pictures) seems to be making a strong push early in his mixed martial arts career for bigger and better things.
Lighty, a K-1 veteran and longtime training partner of former UFC champion
Chuck Liddell (Pictures), dominated a very tough light heavyweight opponent in
Paul Mince (Pictures). Lighty connected with a couple of rights and also proved he had a good chin by taking a few early in the opening round.
Catching Mince with a left high kick, Lighty followed up with a flurry to knock his opponent to the mat. The striker followed Mince down and proceeded to pick his reeling foe apart with vicious elbows. Though Mince made it through the opening round, the ringside doctor called a stop to the fight between periods.
A rematch between
Fernando Arreola (Pictures) and
David Granados (Pictures) looked to find a winner this time, as the last fight resulted in a draw.
The second effort was a lot like the first: a very aggressive grappling match with multiple chokes from both opponents that looked close to ending the fight.
In the end Arreola took a split-decision. Two judges saw 29-28 for the victor, while judge Ray Balewicz tallied the same total in favor of Granados.
"Just"
Mike Martinez seemed eager to get to the after party. Fighting off an armbar attempt by
Eli Moreno (Pictures), Martinez sunk in a triangle choke at the 1:59 mark of the opening round.
Ben Davis (Pictures) made really quick work of
Scott Ball (Pictures) to get the TKO. Ball never had a chance to get anything going as he was caught with a big punch off the bat. Davis followed him down to finish the job just 11 seconds into the fight.
Local boxing sensation Hector Alatorre made his MMA debut against another local,
Elvis Franco (Pictures). Alatorre did not seem like the typical boxer as he showed some submissions and also a good sprawl. Alatorre had a point taken away by referee
Larry Landless (Pictures) for an illegal kick. This cost Alatorre a win and the contest ended in a draw.
"Tapout" show contestant
Greg McIntyre (Pictures) had to work for his TV win as
Richard Chavez (Pictures) seemed to have a rubber arm and would not tap to some really deep and painful looking armbars.
Chavez was beat on for three rounds and barely seemed to know where he was during the final period. He lasted the entire fight only for McIntyre to get the unanimous decision.
Sergio Cortez (Pictures) landed a big right at the start of the fight to drop
Ray Moroyoqui (Pictures). He followed Moroyoqui to the mat and did enough damage for the referee to step in and stop the fight at 1:02 of round one.
Joe Morales (Pictures) scored a unanimous decision over
Francisco Loredo (Pictures)
Adema drummer
Kris Kohls (Pictures) came out on the wrong side of a 29-27 unanimous decision against
Robert Mendez (Pictures). Despite suffering a point deduction for grabbing the cage fencing, Mendez survived to get the victory.
