“Mayhem” Subs Vitale, Continues Run in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Oct. 28 — Icon Sport, formerly known as "Super Brawl," run by TJ Thompson took place Friday at the Neal Blaisdell Arena with a capacity crowd in attendance. The main event of the evening saw Jason “Mayhem” Miller submit Falaniko Vitale (Pictures) in a competitive match.

Vitale spent the better part of two months training with AMC Pankration and Matt Hume (Pictures) for this fight. Niko looked to be in better shape and more focused than just about any fight he's ever been in.

Tonight, however, just wasn't his night as "Mayhem" Miller had plans of his own.

The fight opened with Mayhem getting Vitale in the clinch, which lead to Mayhem impressively taking down Vitale down from the position. Miller quickly passed to side–control, and once on the ground he methodically threw knees to Vitale’s body.

The Hawaiian eventually turned on his hip, but Mayhem moved with him, and as he started to work to his feet, Miller took his back. Vitale showed a great deal of perseverance and patience and actually managed to shake his opponent off to escape out the back door.

Mayhem quickly worked back to a standing clinch, but this time Vitale was the one able to get a takedown. Mayhem responded, however, by quickly working his way back to his feet, where Vitale landed a couple of very solid punches to the head. Although he was momentarily rocked, Miller showed great fortitude and demonstrated an impressive chin.

Back on the ground again, with Miller still stunned, Vitale had an opportunity to finish, taking Mayhem's back and going for a rear-naked choke in the last 30 seconds of the first round. Miller survived.

The second round opened with the local boy, yet again, landing a good shot to the chin. Both fighters immediately worked into a clinch and Mayhem managed to get the takedown, landing in Vitale’s guard. Passing, first to half guard and eventually to full mount, Miller set up the fight-ending choke.

Vitale turned and exposed his back, perhaps thinking that since he was able to escape the position in the first round that he might have similar luck again. Such was not the case though, as Mayhem applied a great deal more pressure and managed to force Vitale to tap to a rear-naked choke at 2:41 of the second round.

Mayhem — winner against three of Hawaii’s best fighters in Vitale, Ronald Jhun (Pictures) and Egan Inoue (Pictures) — showed a great deal of respect to Vitale during his post-fight comments, which the Hawaiian clearly seemed to appreciate.

“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (Pictures), who knocked out Vitale earlier this year to win the Icon middleweight belt, was on hand and asked to say a few words in the ring.

While for the most part being respectful yet confident in his comments about the title fight, set to take place Feb. 11, 2006, Mayhem had only one thing to say in response: "I’m the haole of Hawaii!" Both fighters, in a display of good sportsmanship, shook hands after the brief interview.

Vitale then took the mic to make a few comments, declaring his intentions to retire from the sport. Niko has been an inspirational fighter for many in Hawaii and all over the world, and his presence will be sorely missed.

In an almost equally as exciting co-main event, City Boxing's KJ Noons engaged in a stand-up war against local favorite Harris Sarmiento (Pictures).

Noons, who has the distinction of being the PRIDE Fighting Championships' audition winner, has been making quite a name for himself here in Hawaii with some devastating finishes in his prior fights in the ICON venue.

Having been raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, Noons had a large local following cheering him on here tonight. Sarmiento proved he is tough and has a ton of heart, but Noons got the better of him for the majority of three rounds, rocking and dropping him several times before finally finishing him 4:37 into the third round.
