Pickett Takes Decisive W at CR: Contenders 6

LONDON, Aug. 18 -- Brad Pickett (Pictures) put a stop to the six win streak of Vaughn Harvey in a three-round featherweight battle on Saturday Night.

Headlining the card, Pickett found himself up against the tough Harvey in what was a back-and-forth war of attrition. Harvey began the fight with a series of hard leg kicks but Pickett quickly began to counter with an overhand right, catching the kicks and dropping his opponent to then take control on the mat with thudding body blows and ground and pound.

The pace was frenetic in the second period, with Pickett cutting off the cage and unloading punches. However, Harvey weathered the storm and retaliated with equal venom, which forced Pickett to go for takedowns instead.

Coming out for the third round Harvey changed his tactics, employing a clinch-and-brawl style to good effect, landing a number of knees. However, Pickett quickly adapted, stuffing Harvey into the cage, taking him down and securing top crucifix position before raining down blows to take the win at 3:20.

The much anticipated debut of Leo Negao, a BJJ world champion famed for his many vale tudo victories, ended abruptly as he was disqualified for an illegal knee to the head of his downed opponent, Matt Ewin (Pictures), just a minute in to the match.

John Maguire proved his first win over Jake Bostwick (Pictures) was the real deal in their rematch with an emphatic submission victory.

Bostwick came out with nasty leg kicks and punches but Maguire kept his cool, and worked for a takedown. Bostwick managed to regain his feet and land some knees in the clinch before Maguire dumped him to the mat and took side-control. Using hammerfists to set up a Kimura, Maguire forced Bostwick to tap at 4:00 of the first period.

Mark Buchanan (Pictures) secured a much-needed win to put his career back on track against ground-and-pound specialist Kev Sims. Buchanan defended the quick but sloppy shot of Sims to take control of the ground game. Working his submissions against his outclassed opponent, Buchanan locked up an armbar for the tapout at 1:01 of the first round.

John Hathaway kept his unbeaten record with a three-round domination over the more experienced Brazilian Charles Barbos, who displayed real guts to last the full 15 minutes.

In the first, Hathaway evaded a spinning back kick to take Barbos to the ground and blast him for the whole first stanza with a barrage of punches. In the second round, Barbos began to show his kickboxing pedigree but Hathaway took his opponent to the mat continuing to drop bombs from the top. The pace slowed in the third, but Hathaway was able to let his hands go before taking Barbos down and striking from the guard to cinch the unanimous decision.

In a fast-paced battle, Jeff Hayes defeated Kym Farrid by rear-naked choke. Both displayed excellent transitions and wrestling, going back and forth from Farrid's early pick and slam. After a number of reversals on the mat Hayes got the upper hand with strikes that forced Farrid to give up his back before sinking in the choke at 3:57 of the first frame.

Luke Smith weathered the heavy slams of Will Russell to rack up his second submission victory to move to 4-0. Attacking Russell with strikes Smith found himself dumped to the mat twice before taking his opportunity to lock on a triangle choke for the win at 3:33 of the first stanza.

Jared Farah employed an intelligent game plan against the heavy-handed Scott Jansen (Pictures), controlling the clinch and taking the fight to the mat and where dominated with ground-and-pound. Jansen went for broke at the start of the second round with a flying punch but Farah tied his man up and sunk in a guillotine choke for the win at 48 seconds of the second round.

Mark Smith stood his ground against the aggressive Michael King (Pictures), securing the victory at just 15 seconds of the first round. Using his jab to defend his opponent's wild attack, Smith unleashed a storm of pinpoint accurate strikes to knock King out cold, and continue his way up the Contenders ladder.

Glen Winslade calmly cut Jack Magee's front leg away before using ground-and-pound to take the win. Overcoming a reach disadvantage, Winslade targeted the leg of Magee with unbelievable success throughout the first period. Continuing to work the leg kick, Winslade dropped his opponent and finished the fight with a flurry of unanswered strikes from side-control at 1:32 of round two.

Using the slam to good effect, James Elson overcame Steven Dossett in the second stanza after a fierce brawl. With both trading heavy punches from the start, it was Elson's superior wrestling that proved to be the deciding factor. Though Dossett landed some heavy blows on the feet, Elson took the fight to the floor, slipped out of a guillotine choke, and pounded his way to victory at 1:15 of the second.

Ex-Marine Mark Tucker destroyed Steven Elliott over three rounds, moving under the reach of his opponent to take the fight to the mat and control with ground-and-pound. Elliott sought to work his submissions in the second but Tucker powered out and continued to strike. With one eye closed shut, Elliott tried to keep the match upright but Tucker secured another takedown, worked to mount, and secured an armbar at 1:50 of the third stanza.

Jody Cottham (Pictures) submitted Danny Beevor via armbar in the opening stanza after a battle on the feet. Both fighters traded strikes at the start, before Cottham's pressure forced his opponent to take a shot and give up his reach advantage. On the mat, Cottham dropped strikes from top position before taking the armbar for the victory at 2:30 of the first.
