LONDON, Nov. 10 -- John "The Hitman" Hathaway delivered a dominating performance Saturday at Cage Rage Contenders 7. He overwhelmed Tsunami gym fighter Tommy Maguire, eventually bashing him on the floor to seal an important second-round win.
Maguire did not look to be in perfect fighting condition, but he is known as a determined fighter, which he demonstrated for much of the first round with his stubborn defense in the clinch. However, the ZT Fight Skool fighter, Hathaway, put on an impressive wrestling display, taking the fight to the mat and hitting a perfect switch to stay on top and in control of the bout.
Coming out for the second round with renewed zeal, Hathaway quickly scored the takedown and began to impose his will in the fight. He unleashed a torrent of hammerfists and punches on Maguire, bloodying his face in the process.
His opponent trapped against the fence, Hathaway continued his blistering attack until referee Grant Waterman stepped in to save the Tsunami fighter from quite a nasty beating.
With the impressive victory, Hathaway earned himself a three-fight contract to fight on the Cage Rage main show and a genuine chance to display his skills on the international scene.
In the lead-up bout,
James Elson came through some real trouble in his fight with Jake "Brutal" Bostwick before turning the tables on the Kidbrooke fighter in the later stages. Bostwick appeared to have the entire crowd behind him as he tore into Elson in the opening seconds, knocking him to the ground with punches and chasing after him on the mat.
Bostwick kept a relentless pace for more than a minute, controlling the action and hammering his opponent with full force. However, Elson somehow managed to keep his composure and took every opportunity to slip out of the clutches of the fired-up Eltham warrior.
To his credit, Elson resiliently weathered the storm and reversed his way into mount, where he rained down a stream of punches that made Bostwick turn his back -- a mistake that allowed the underdog to claim the win with a rear-naked choke.
Michael Pastou fought to a very tight game plan in his fight with Russian kickboxer-turned-MMA fighter Dimitri O'Malley to finish the contest with a neat first-round armbar submission.
Avoiding the standup altogether, Pastou shot in for a fantastically executed takedown that put him in full control of the fight. The Titan representative quickly moved to mount and rained down a torrent of punches on the game but helpless Russian, setting up a slick armbar that left O'Malley with no option but to submit.
London Shootfighter
Charlie Francis showed some star quality in his bout with
Glen Winslade, pushing him all over the cage before ruining the Game Over fighter on the floor with a vicious dose of ground-and-pound.
Francis looked very sharp on the feet, boxing behind a stiff double jab before slamming his opponent to the mat with apparent ease. Once on the ground, Francis let go with a barrage of punches, damaging Winslade and giving him little choice but to surrender.
Soft-looking Saied Gholamie had a strong start in his bout with
Denniston Sutherland, executing a perfect lateral drop in the opening seconds. Able to keep his opponent on his back, Gholamie scored with a series of shocking punches that resonated throughout the packed nightclub.
Incredibly, though bleeding profusely from his mouth, Sutherland turned the contest around in the second, backing his foe up against the cage and starting to catch him at will. Two minutes in a brutal uppercut followed quickly by a straight right sent Gholamie crashing to the floor in defeat.
Fiercely aggressive even before the match,
Jason Young entered the cage and stared at opponent
Michael King (Pictures) with a look of intense malice -- a display of gamesmanship that seemed to genuinely rattle his 0-2 opponent.
King offered no movement and little in the way of offense in the early moments, allowing Young to step in and out of range at will and land damaging punches and body kicks as he pounced on his battered opponent.
The break between rounds did little to sway the momentum of the fight. The Elite fighter immediately scored with a double-leg takedown. Continuing his relentless assault on King's face, Young forced another stoppage midway through the second round.
Scott Jansen (Pictures) didn't waste a second in his fight with Jody Cotham. He knocked his opposition to the mat and out of the fight with savage punches in only 10 seconds.
Failing to commit fully to an early takedown attempt, Cotham left himself wide open to a huge right hook from Jansen, who followed him to the floor with punches for the near record-breaking win.
Mark "Babyface" Smith got the crowd going as he claimed victory in a clash of styles with former boxer Dave Wood.
After eating a punch that opened a cut on the bridge of his nose, Smith took the fight to the floor at the first opportunity. Once grounded, the result seemed a formality as the Elite fighter forced Wood to give up his back and then he sank the rear-naked choke to seal a lightening-fast 47-second victory.
Sami Berik (Pictures) rushed out of the blocks and straight into a solid punch from opponent
Danny Fletcher, a shot that floored "The Hun" and left him in considerable jeopardy.
Fletcher went to work with mean punches on the mat. But after a scramble, Berik amazingly got through with a huge left hook from a kneeling position that badly stunned his opponent. Seizing his chance to make up for his initial embarrassment, Berik followed with a pair of right hands that stopped his adversary after two and a half minutes.
In undercard action, both Edgeleson Lue and
Jack Mason (Pictures) had chances to inflict damage on the floor. Yet it was Mason who came out on top, submitting his foe with an arm triangle a minute into the third round.
London Shootfighter Georgio Andrews demonstrated some excellent wrestling in his contest with
Danny Beevor, putting him on the ground at will and bashing him from the mount for the win.
