The Walkmen: UFC 195 ‘Lawler vs. Condit’

The most important piece of any Ultimate Fighting Championship event is the action that takes place inside the Octagon. However, the combatants who walk through the cage doors and put their lives on the line like to feel good about themselves before they engage in fisticuffs.

UFC 195 “Lawler vs. Condit” on Saturday produced walkout songs from a variety of artists, but the hip hop community was represented best. House of Pain’s overplayed “Jump Around” made an appearance thanks to Brian Ortega, as did Eminem’s “Soldier,” courtesy of former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas also played host to a number of off-kilter tracks.

Robbie Lawler retained the UFC welterweight title by the skin of his teeth in the main event, scoring a split decision over Carlos Condit. The “Ruthless” one tore the roof off the building with Sam and Dave’s classic “Hold On, I’m Coming.” Like the song suggests, Lawler held on until his vaunted power came through for him late in the fifth round and provided him with the final push he needed.

Two other fighters, Drew Dober and Albert Tumenov, created a firestorm on social media for entirely different reasons. Dober strolled into battle to the siren-like pipes of Christina Aguilera and her immensely popular “Ain’t No Other Man,” as he earned a unanimous decision over Scott Holtzman. As wacky as his song choice might have been, nothing compared to Tumenov’s. The welterweight slugger marched to the Octagon to face Lorenz Larkin to a terrifying, ominously plodding Russian song no one seemed to know.

Other artists who got some love at UFC 195 included Australian pop stars Men at Work (Kyle Noke), Rage Against the Machine (Condit) and Johnny Cash (Justine Kish).
