The Walkmen: UFC on Fox 19
Considering all the issues that preceded it, with injuries and positive drug tests leading to fight cancellations and deck reshuffling, UFC on Fox 19 was a pleasant surprise. The event on Saturday was loaded with submissions and knockouts, as fans got their money’s worth at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.
However, the fights were not the entire story. The participants all strolled down to the cage backed by signature songs, and the choice of music was as diverse as the fighters themselves.
Brought to the Octagon by Pregador Luo’s “Vou Colher Sorrindo,” Glover Teixeira likely put an end to Rashad Evans’ plan to eventually regain the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title, as he flattened “Suga” with a left hook and a right uppercut in the first round of their main event. Meanwhile, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 winner Michael Chiesa certainly chose a proper tune -- Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” -- before submitting Kings MMA’s Beneil Dariush with a rear-naked choke in the feature lightweight prelim. Dariush rolled with “Rock With You,” from the legendary Michael Jackson, but inspiration from “The King of Pop” was not enough.
Other entrance music highlights included White Zombie’s “Ratfinks, Suicide Tanks, Cannibal Girls” (Michael Graves), DMX’s “The Rain (Omari Akhmedov) and Europe’s “The Final Countdown” (Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos).
