CSAC Approves Amateur MMA, Visits Instant Replay

The California State Athletic Commission unanimously decided Monday
to delegate authority of amateur MMA to the newly formed California
Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Organization (CAMO).
CSAC commissioner Mario Rodriguez, who co-chaired a committee with commissioner June Collision that reviewed and selected candidate organizations on Aug. 20, said amateur MMA could be enacted as soon as CAMO is capable to oversee it.
CAMO, a non-profit organization, was ceded all control over the
state’s amateur MMA program, much like USA Boxing oversees the
amateur boxing circuit in California.
CAMO representatives, Jeremy Lappen and J.T. Steele (both formerly of Pro Elite), said the organization will introduce regulations and organization details in a press release in the coming weeks.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission passed legislation on Aug. 19, allowing a referee to utilize instant replay, if available, in cases where a bout has ended in injury. The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board instituted an instant-replay option for promoters in January 2007 and has already utilized it once in a December 2008 amateur event.
In other notes:
• Neither Mitsuhiro Ishida nor a member of his camp filed a written complaint to accompany a verbal protest that was made by one of his reps on Aug. 15 following Ishida’s third-round loss to Strikeforce interim lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez in San Jose, Calif. According to the CSAC, a member of Ishida’s camp accused Melendez of “greasing.” Without a written complaint, no investigation into the bout will be launched.
• An officials’ training program looks to become a hot topic in California in the coming months.
Numerous requests were made for amended regulation in terms of a training program for boxing and MMA officials, including judges and referees during both CSAC Executive Officer David Thornton’s address and the public-comment period. Calls were also made for some kind of training program for boxing and MMA officials, including judges and referees.
Multiple individuals also complained of taking and passing training courses administered by former executive officer Armando Garcia in 2006 and not receiving any assignments.
