Boxing: Terence Crawford Dominates Dierry Jean, Takes Him Out in 10th

Terence “Bud” Crawford already has won two world titles and the coveted Fighter of the Year award, which he captured in 2014. He’s quickly capturing the hearts of the boxing world and if he continues to dominate the opposition in the manner in which he did on Saturday night, there’s no telling how long he’ll do the same with the mainstream sports world.

Crawford was nearly untouchable against opponent Dierry Jean in the main event of an HBO-televised card from the CenturyLink Center in Terence’s hometown of Omaha, Neb. Crawford defended his WBO junior welterweight title against the Haitian-born, Montreal-based fighter, stopping him in the 10th round.

Crawford quickly switched his usual orthodox stance to southpaw and once he did that, it immediately gave Jean problems. “Bud” utilized a stiff jab that he rattled off like a miniature battering ram, and when the opportunities arose, he nailed his counterpart with blistering right hooks on the inside and long, powerful lead lefts from the outside. Jean tried several times to get in on the inside, but he found it nearly impossible at times because of how lethal Crawford’s offense was.

Jean was dropped by a perfect left-right to the jaw just as the opening round was about to end and he was rocked several more times throughout the encounter. As the rounds wore away, “Bud” increased his punch output and changed from pure boxer-puncher into someone hellbent on ending the fight in spectacular fashion. The local fighter tore into his challenger with crushing hooks to the body and head, but the Haitian stood tough, trying everything in his power to stay afloat in what was quickly becoming a raging river that was dangerous to cross.

Jean was knocked down by a pair of rights to the head at the end of the ninth and after motioning to his corner to not throw the towel in after being wobbled in the following round, Crawford closed him out. Dierry (29-2, 20 KOs) again was rattled by a right hook and then a nasty left to the head late in the 10th. The challenger stumbled to his left along the ropes and before he could recover, another long lead left to the head dropped him nearly through the ropes. Referee Tony Weeks had seen enough and mercifully stopped the attack official at the 2:30 mark.

“You can look to your left and see those two guys that have called me out,” a happy, yet vengeful Crawford said afterward. “His manager guaranteed that he was going to walk away to Canada with my belt from my hometown. I take things personal.”

Shortly after that outburst against Jean and his team, Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) immediately had his attention turned to Manny Pacquiao. A report on ESPN.com earlier in the evening suggested that the Filipino’s final fight will be in April and if Crawford looks fabulous enough, the two will meet.

“I’m ready,” he stated through a grin. “Bob (Arum), make it happen. I’m ready.”
