World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight contenders Cub Swanson
and Chad
Mendes will face off at WEC 50 “Cruz vs. Benavidez 2” on Aug.
18 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The bout and two others
were made official on Tuesday by the promotion. WEC 50 will air
live on the Versus network.
The 26-year-old Swanson rebounded from his June 2009 defeat to divisional leader Jose Aldo with a third-round submission win over John Franchi at WEC 44 last November.
The undefeated Mendes, a noted up-and-comer out of Urijah
Faber’s Team Alpha Male camp, sports back-to-back wins in the
WEC cage against Erik Koch and
Anthony
Morrison, who the 2008 NCAA wrestling tournament finalist
submitted in the first round at WEC 48 in April.
Also made official on Tuesday, Scott Jorgensen meets Brit Brad Pickett in a 135-pound tilt, while Anthony Njokuani will welcome newcomer Maciej Jewtuszko to the promotion in a lightweight bout.
Jorgensen continues his march toward a bantamweight title shot after four straight wins in the WEC cage. In April, Jorgensen avenged a June 2009 split decision loss to Antonio Banuelos with a unanimous decision nod over the John Hackleman-trained fighter.
Pickett, a staple of the U.K.’s MMA scene for years, has made the most of his WEC invitation with wins over Kyle Dietz and Demetrius Johnson, who the brawling Pickett decisioned in April.
After three consecutive WEC victories, Njokuani will look to rebound from a first-round submission defeat at the hands of Shane Roller at WEC 48 in April.
Polish import Jewtuszko is undefeated in seven bouts, including a first-round heelhook victory against Edvardas Norkeliunas at a Beast of the East event on June 12 in Gydnia, Poland.
