Fedor Close to Strikeforce Extension
The future of Fedor Emelianenko became a bit clearer this week, with his M-1 management telling MMAFighting.com that a contract extension was about two-thirds done. Emelianenko, who has one fight left on his Strikeforce contract, told M-1’s Web site that he’d like to sign for another four to six fights. Most signs point to an announcement sometime in September.
A rematch against Fabricio Werdum has been batted about, though it’s not clear when that may happen. Werdum’s camp announced this week he will be off until January after undergoing surgery to his elbow.
As for heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, CEO Scott Coker told “The MMA Hour” the he’s eyeing matching the Dutchman against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva on an October card. The promotion confirmed an Oct. 9 date for a Showtime event in San Jose, Calif., will feature the opening round of its middleweight tournament.
