6 Bouts Added to UFC 116

Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama are official for a co-headlining middleweight bout at UFC 116 “Lesnar vs. Carwin” on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The promotion made six more bouts official on Tuesday for the holiday-weekend event anchored by a heavyweight title unification bout between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.

Silva, a former Pride Fighting Championships star, will take on the ethnic Korean fighter in a bout that will draw added interest from Japanese MMA fans. The uninhibited Brazilian striker earned a unanimous decision victory over “The Ultimate Fighter” winner Mike Bisping at UFC 110 last February in Sydney, Australia.

The 34-year-old Akiyama earned a split decision against Alan Belcher in his Octagon debut at UFC 100 last July. A former K-1 Hero’s light heavyweight champion, Akiyama has only been defeated once against K-1 heavyweight Jerome LeBanner in 2005.

“The Ultimate Fighter” season one runner-up Stephan Bonnar will also meet Krzysztof Soszynski in a rematch of their UFC 110 bout in February. Soszynski was awarded a third-round stoppage when officials deemed a cut on Bonnar’s forehead to severe for him to continue. The cut was caused by a unintentional headbutt the referee didn’t see.

Brendan Schuab will face Minnesota Martial Arts Academy product Chris Tuchscherer in a heavyweight bout. Schuab, a one-time Arena Football League player and “TUF 8” finalist, scored his first Octagon victory against Chase Gormley via first-round punches at UFC on Versus 1 in March. Tuchscherer, who trains alongside UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, also notched his first UFC win against Tim Hague by majority decision at UFC 109 in February.

Kendall Grove will try and bounce back from an April loss to wrestler Mark Munoz at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., when he meets Goran Reljic in a middleweight offering. Croatian import Reljic will also have a defeat to move past, as he dropped a unanimous decision to CB Dollaway at UFC 110 in February.

Durable welterweights Chris Lytle and Matt Brown will square off at UFC 116 as well. Indiana firefighter Lytle notched a swift first-round victory over Brian Foster at UFC 110 in February. Brown was submitted by Renzo Gracie student Ricardo Almeida in the second round of their contest at UFC 111 last March.

In another heavyweight matchup, TUF 10 alumnus Jon Madsen will face undefeated Czech fighter Karlos Vemola, who will make his promotional debut.
