The world-ranked
Diego Nunes will lock horns with
Tyler Toner in a showdown between once-beaten featherweights at
WEC 51 “Aldo vs. Gamburyan” on Sept. 30 at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colo. Nine fights are now official for the event, which will air live on the Versus network.
Nunes bounced back from his first career defeat -- a decision loss to Sengoku veteran
L.C. Davis -- with a split verdict against Atlanta-based Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt
Raphael Assuncao at WEC 49 in June. The 27-year-old Brazilian, now anchored at the revered Nova Uniao camp, has delivered 11 of his 14 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Said to be considering a move to bantamweight, his last four fights have all gone the distance.
Toner, the former Ring of Fire featherweight champion, has rattled off three consecutive victories since his 2009 bout against
Jamie Schmidt ended in a no contest. The 27-year-old last appeared at WEC 48 in April, when he stopped the previously unbeaten
Brandon Visher on first-round elbows. Toner trains out of the Grudge Training Center, along with UFC heavyweight contender
Shane Carwin and former middleweight King of Pancrase
Nate Marquardt. He owns eight first-round finishes among his 10 wins and suffered his only career setback in a unanimous decision to current WEC bantamweight title contender
Scott Jorgensen in 2007.
A featherweight title match between defending champion
Jose Aldo and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 runner-up
Manny Gamburyan will headline WEC 51, along with an anticipated rematch pairing
Donald Cerrone with former WEC lightweight titleholder
Jamie Varner. In addition, one-time WEC bantamweight king
Miguel Torres will answer the bell against
Charlie Valencia, as he tries to put the brakes on a two-fight losing streak.
