Jose Aldo will put his brand new UFC featherweight title on the line against Josh Grispi at UFC 125, going down on New Year's Day from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The bout had been rumored for weeks, but the UFC finally made the fight official Tuesday evening via press release. The featherweight title fight takes the place of a pivotal heavyweight tilt that was to unfold between Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson.

A former title contender, Carwin was forced to withdraw from the matchup due to a chronic back injury. He underwent surgery earlier today, and it is unknown how long he will be out of action. Without an opponent for Nelson, the UFC pulled “Big Country” from the card as well.

Aldo is considered one the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet. Dominant during his time in the WEC, “Junior” went 8-0 in the promotion, notching victories over a who's who of featherweight talent, including former champions Urijah Faber and Mike Thomas Brown. Aldo dominated Brown at WEC 44, earning both a second-round knockout and the 145-pound title.

Aldo has been defeated only once in his career, falling to Luciano Azevedo at Jungle Fight 5 in 2005. The Brazilian's most recent title defense was against Armenian judo black belt Manny Gamburyan at WEC 51 in September. Aldo landed cracking leg kicks to Gamburyan's thigh, setting up a second-round flurry that relieved the Armenian of his senses.

Grispi is on a 10-fight winning streak and hasn't lost since 2006. The American has won all four of his bouts inside the WEC cage and owns all but one of his career 14 victories by either knockout or submission. The single decision victory on his resume, a 2007 win over Fernando Bernandino, marks the only time Grispi has been past the first round. Like Aldo, the South Shore Sportfighting product has only lost once. The 22-year-old made his WEC debut in 2008, choking out fellow contender Mark Hominick at WEC 32.

UFC 125 will be headlined by a lightweight title clash between champion Frankie Edgar and the only man to ever beat him in Gray Maynard. The fight will be a rematch of their 2008 contest, which Maynard won by unanimous decision.
