Alexander Gustafsson Eyeing Several Opponents for Return Bout, Including Yoel Romero

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson is rolling out the welcoming mat for middleweight fighter Yoel Romero, who is coming off a close split-decision loss to Robert Whittaker last Saturday in the main event of UFC 225 in Chicago.

Romero missed weight for the second time in a row and speculation has been mounting that the Cuban may look to move up a weight class to avoid the situation occurring again. Last Saturday night, “The Soldier of God” initially missed weight and was given a two hour window to shed an extra pound. A frustrated Romero told Joe Rogan during the official weigh-ins that the Illinois Athletic Commission stopped him after an hour of cutting the additional weight and informed him his time was up and he had to weigh in again. The hour was not enough as Romero missed weight by .2 pounds and was ineligible to compete for the title against Whittaker.

Romero said his team plans to sue the Illinois Athletic Commission for not allowing him the full promised two hours to make the weight.

If Romero was to move up to the light heavyweight division, he’ll be welcomed by Gustafsson, who has already called out another former middleweight in Luke Rockhold. “The Mauler” posted a tweet taking a jab at Romero for missing weight again.

Gustafsson has not competed inside the Octagon since May 2017, when he knocked out Glover Teixeira and has been on the sidelines since his shoulder surgery last year. However, the Swede has been active on social media challenging the likes of Rockhold and his teammate, current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

Gustafsson had been hoping to fight Rockhold by the end of the year, although that’s looking unlikely at this stage as Rockhold recently posted picture of his surgically repaired leg.

Cormier will take on Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title on July 7 in the main event of UFC 226.
