Ultimate Fighting Championship’s June trip to Germany will feature a 205-pound main event between former title challengers Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira.
UFC President Dana White confirmed the rumored matchup in an interview with MMA Crazy TV following Monday’s UFC 189 World Championship Tour press conference in London. No other bouts have been announced for the UFC Fight Night card, which will take place June 20 at O2 World arena in Berlin.
Gustafsson, 28, is best known for giving UFC light heavyweight champ and pound-for-pound ruler Jon Jones the toughest five rounds of his title reign in September 2013. After coming up short in a decision against Jones, the Swedish “Mauler” took out previously unbeaten Jimi Manuwa with second-round strikes. Gustafsson was on the verge of earning another title shot before suffering a first-stoppage loss to Anthony Johnson on Jan. 24.
Teixeira, 35, also went five rounds with Jones, though his April 2014 loss to the champ was decidedly more lopsided. The heavy-handed Brazilian returned in October and was dealt another decision loss by wrestler Phil Davis, marking the first back-to-back defeats of Teixeira’s 12-year career.
