Alves, Kampmann, Flyweight Semifinalists Cleared for UFC on FX 2

Few have produced more consistent quality within the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s cutthroat welterweight division than Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann. Now, their paths cross.

Alves, whose past problems with the scales are well-chronicled, checked in at 170.5 pounds for his high-stakes showdown with Kampmann (170.5) in the UFC on FX 2 headliner on Friday at the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia. Meanwhile, the semifinal participants in the historic UFC flyweight tournament also met their contracted weight requirements without issue at Thursday’s official weigh-in, as Joseph Benavidez (125.5) locks horns with Yasuhiro Urushitani (125.5) and Demetrious Johnson (125.5) toes the line against Ian McCall (125.5).

Alves will aim for back-to-back wins for the first time since 2008. The 28-year-old American Top Team stalwart last competed at UFC 138 in November, when he submitted the previously unbeaten Papy Abedi with a first-round rear-naked choke at the LG Arena in Birmingham, England. Long viewed as one of the welterweight division’s premier standup fighters, Alves has secured more than half (11) of his 19 professional victories by knockout or technical knockout. Wins over former title contender Josh Koscheck and UFC hall of famer Matt Hughes anchor his resume, which includes an outstanding 11-5 mark inside the Octagon.

Kampmann has not fought since UFC 139 in November, when he captured a unanimous decision from fast-rising welterweight Rick Story at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. An Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts representative, the 29-year-old Dane wields a diverse offensive attack, as evidenced by his seven wins by knockout or technical knockout and six others by submission. Kampmann owns a 2009 victory over Carlos Condit, the man who now holds the interim UFC welterweight crown.
