Aoki to Fight Olympic Silver Medalist Judoka
Only in mixed martial arts can an athlete go from fighting one of
the top-ranked competitors in the world to a complete newcomer.
That is exactly what Shinya
Aoki (Pictures) will do on Dec. 31, when he meets
South Korean Jung Bu-Kyung in the ring.
In Bu-Kyung, Aoki -- who was originally billed as fighting top-five ranked lightweight Gesias Calvancante (Pictures) on the Yarennoka! card in Tokyo -- gets a silver medalist judo player from the 2000 Sydney Olympic games (60 kg) and 2004 Asian games gold medalist (66 kg).
Bu-Kyung, 29, made the transition to MMA two months ago and trains with Dong Sik Yoon (Pictures) out of the newly established Team Yoon. According to his representatives, Bu-Kyung has adept grappling skills. Yoon also commented that Jung's pinning techniques, which will be tested against the dynamic Aoki, are better than his.
