Bantamweights Urijah Faber, Renan ‘Barao’ on Target for UFC 149 Interim Title Bout

Urijah Faber wants a piece of Ultimate Fighting Championship gold, no matter what form it takes.

Faber tipped the scales at 135 pounds for his interim bantamweight title bout with Renan “Barao” Pegado (135) in the UFC 149 headliner on Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The eight other men lined up for duty on the main card, including middleweight co-headliners Hector Lombard (185.5) and Tim Boetsch (186), also met their contracted weight requirements at Friday’s official weigh-in.

Faber has won three times in his past four appearances. The 33-year-old Team Alpha Male founder last competed at UFC 139 in November, when he submitted Brian Bowles with a second-round guillotine choke at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. An Isla Vista, Calif., native and former World Extreme Cagefighting champion at 145 pounds, Faber has delivered more than half (14) of his 26 professional victories by submission. He has compiled a 2-1 mark in the Octagon since the WEC merger.

Anchored at the revered Nova Uniao camp, “Barao” has gone undefeated in his last 29 outings, with 28 wins and one no contest. The 25-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt last appeared at UFC 143 in February, when he cruised to a unanimous verdict over Scott Jorgensen at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Now a perfect 3-0 in the UFC, he has secured 19 of his 28 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. “Barao” trains alongside featherweight king Jose Aldo, one of four men ever to defeat Faber.

UFC 149 “Faber vs. Barao” -- which airs on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT -- will also feature a heavyweight battle pitting Cheick Kongo (231) against Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts representative Shawn Jordan (250) and a pair of welterweight tilts, as Brian Ebersole (171) meets James Head (170) and Chris Clements (170) collides with “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 alum Matt Riddle (170.8).

Two hours prior, the FX network will carry four preliminary matchups: Court McGee (185.5) vs. Nick Ring (185), Roland Delorme (135) vs. Francisco Rivera (136), Ryan Jimmo (205) vs. Anthony Perosh (205.5) and Bryan Caraway (135.5) vs. Mitch Gagnon (135). The two remaining undercard bouts will stream live to the UFC’s Facebook page, as Antonio Carvalho (145) locks horns with Daniel Pineda (145) and Mitch Clarke (155) toes the line against Anton Kuivanen (156).
