Shawn Bunch vs. Steve Garcia

Round 1

From the opening bell, Garcia is already looking to set up a counter knee on the stout wrestler. Though Bunch slams his larger opponent, “Mean Machine” quickly throws up a triangle attempt and then explodes to his feet. The U.S. national wrestling champion grinds Garcia against the cage and hits another double-leg slam. Bunch grabs a body lock, but Garcia regains his vertical base. Bunch then tries a belly-to-back suplex from the waist cinch; his opponent defends well, but the wrestler scores with a slick trip. Garcia launches a flurry of elbows from his back and works to his feet, eating a hard knee to the ribs on the way up. Garcia whiffs on a high kick, but lands a hard one to the body before Bunch takes him down again. Garcia counters with a fruitless armbar try as the round expires.

Garcia cracks his shorter foe with a nice straight left; Bunch counters with another takedown, but Garcia again stifles any ground-and-pound by landing short hammer fists and elbows off his back. The referee stands the fighters with one minute to go, and Garcia presses forward, flashing a jab and winging a lead right hook prior to suffering yet another takedown. Bunch does nothing with it, however, and holds on until the bell sounds.

Bunch's wrestling wasn't enough.
Bunch has had very little offense to speak of and now looks exhausted from his repeated takedown failures. Garcia now finds his range with his left, then cracks Bunch with an uppercut. The former Pan-American wrestling champion is exhausted and flops to his back after another failed takedown. Garcia jumps on his opponent and lands a single diving right hand. Roberto Romero steps in and stops the fight very quickly, awarding Garcia the technical knockout victory against an exhausted-if-not-battered Bunch.

Another low kick from “Fast Eddie,” and Ramirez bulls forward with a left hook to the ribs. Ramirez finally catches one of those kicks and shoves his wiry opponent to the floor, mashing with short punches from guard. Larrea somehow uses a keylock from the bottom to sweep Ramirez and then fails on a heel hook attempt before throwing his legs up in a triangle position as the New Mexican dives back into his guard. He pounds away with left elbows and then steps into mount, picking punches and elbows as Lanier does his best to cover up.
