Bellator 205-Pound Tournament Alternate Bout:
Francis Carmont vs. Anthony Ruiz

Round 1

Ruiz misses with a slow-motion overhand right, takes a kick to the body but catches the next one and shoves Carmont against the cage. Carmont turns the tables with a standing kimura attempt which he uses to roll Ruiz to the ground at the base of the fence. Ruiz comes out on top midway through the round, but Carmont uses another kimura from guard to work his way back to his feet. The kimura puts Ruiz on the ground again, and this time Carmont doesn’t let go of the hold when they hit the mat. After 20 seconds of working the arm, Carmont puts his hooks in and takes Ruiz’s back. In the final minute of the round, Ruiz fights off a rear-naked choke and an armbar attempt but can’t free himself before the bell.

Carmont advanced in case he's needed.
Carmont slips on a kick but hops back up before Ruiz can capitalize. After a bit of ineffective striking from both men, Carmont clinches up, moves with Ruiz toward the fence and then turns the corner for a standing rear-waistlock. Carmont drags Ruiz to the ground and again establishes back-mount. This time, Carmont’s left arm quickly slides underneath Ruiz’s chin, but “A-Train” escapes the sub attempt by peeling away the Frenchman’s hands. Ruiz gets to one knee, Carmont still on his back with one hook, blocked by the cage on his right side. Carmont rolls him away from the fence to re-establish back mount. Ruiz tries to punch over his shoulder, rolls to his knees and over again as Carmont threatens with an arm-triangle setup. Inside the two-minute mark now, and Ruiz escapes yet another RNC attempt to roll to his knees. Carmont goes to ride position and socks Ruiz with under-the-arm punches before jumping on the American’s back again. Suddenly, Ruiz twists around to take top position with 45 seconds on the clock. Ruiz is trying to land punches, elbows, but Carmont locks down his arms and rides out the remainder of the round.

Bellator 145-Pound Fight:
Ousmane Thomas Diagne vs. Mike Malott

Round 1

Diagne slips while throwing a kick and staggers backwards as Malott tries to blitz him against the cage. Diagne clinches and reverses, but the featherweights separate after 40 seconds and return to the center. Again, Malott catches Diagne throwing a kick and this time rushes him to the ground. Malott jumps on his opponent’s back and secures the position with a body triangle as Diagne stands up. Diagne has both of his arms free and is defending well as Malott hunts for a rear-naked choke for the better part of two minutes. Malott has his right arm around Diagne’s jaw but he’s not under the chin and Diagne again fights it off. Malott jumps down from his perch midway through the round and drops to try a double-leg, but he’s stuffed. Diagne stands him up and reverses the position on the fence, and now the 145ers break apart with just under two minutes to go. Malott hits another takedown and goes straight to Diagne’s back again. Hard punches are landing for the Canadian now, forcing Diagne to cover up. Malott applies the body triangle again and spends the final 40 seconds working for the RNC.

Round 2

Diagne and Malott fought to a draw.
Diagne tries to keep Malott on the end of his jabs and leg kicks, but Malott rushes forward and catches him with a couple long, straight right hands. The next time Malott charges, Diagne plays matador and sidesteps as the Canadian falls to the ground. Diagne allows Malott to stand and tags him with a right hand which momentarily drops him to a knee. Malott gets up, takes a few seconds and then drops levels, but Diagne blocks the shot. A left high kick from Diagne slaps the face of Malott, who seems to have cleared the cobwebs from his flash knockdown. Diagne catches a kick and spins Malott to the ground with 1:40 on the clock, but Malott is back up 10 seconds later. Diagne gives him a knee to the face along the way and then goes to his back foot again, countering Malott with leg kicks and jabs. Malott grabs hold of Diagne for a brief clinch and clubs him with an elbow on the way out. Nonetheless, Diagne looks the fresher fighter as the bell sounds to end the middle frame.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Diagne
Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Diagne
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Diagne

Round 3

The action from round two continues, as Diagne tries to stay on the outside and counter, while Malott looks to push his way inside to slug in the clinch or try a takedown. Diagne stuffs a long takedown attempt from Malott, resets and catches him with a couple good right-handed counters. An uppercut and follow-up head kick connect for Diagne, who slides out of the way of Malott’s counters. Even when Malott is able to back up his opponent to the fence, Diagne finds a way to angle out and avoid punishment. Halfway through the final round now, Diagne scores with a leg kick, stuffs a double-leg shot and stands up Malott to deliver a knee to the ribs. Diagne counters a right hook from Malott with a lovely overhand, then catches him stepping inside to score with a left hook. Diagne is doing his best work here in the third, but Malott won’t stop pushing forward, even as his face becomes increasingly bloody and swollen. Diagne decides to hit a takedown with 30 seconds on the clock, slips out of a guillotine and decks Malott with a hard elbow through guard. Malott swings up his legs to try an armbar but runs out of time, and this one will be decided by the judges.

Round 1

Both men are extremely busy in the opening minute, throwing combinations in the pocket, but Arcangel appears to be landing the cleaner shots, forcing Palacios to switch stances a few times. The southpaw Arcangel is also keeping Palacios at bay with a variety of teep kicks, body shots and chops to the legs as he bounces in the Thai stance. Palacios reclaims some ground in the final minute, backing up Arcangel to the ropes with leg kicks and a few to the ribs. Arcangel drills with a right hand to the face of Palacios, who misses with a spinning backfist just before the horn.

Palacios comes back with a pair of hard leg kicks and one to the ribs. Arcangel connects with a left hook at the 30-second mark, answered by another low kick from Palacios. A push kick backs up Arcangel, who then gets grazed by a last-second axe kick from Palacios near the ropes.

Palacios earned a split decision over Arcangel.
Palacios gets through with a kick to the body before the 145ers clash leg kicks. Arcangel is getting busier at the start of round three, but Palacios is deflecting most of his offense with a high guard. Arcangel lands an outside thigh kick and Palacios’ return fire lands to Arcangel’s cup. After a few seconds, the fight resumes and Palacios has a flying knee attempt deflected. Arcangel backs up to the corner again, lands a few push kicks and covers up as Palacios tries a spinning backfist. Palacios blocks a sweep attempt, gets a teep kick to the breadbasket. Arcangel’s kicks are keeping Palacios out of the pocket in the final minute, leading to a tight final round for the judges to score.

Glory Kickboxing 145-Pound Bout:
Serhiy Adamchuck vs. Anvar Boynazarov

Round 1

Boynazarov is aggressive in the opening minute, mixing long right hands with lunging knees and body kicks. Adamchuck retaliates with a hard body shot of his own behind a stinging left hook. Adamchuck doubles up his jab, then a straight left comes to split Boynazarov’s gloves. The straight left scores again for Adamchuck before he’s shoved against the ropes by Boynazarov, who has been inching forward almost the entire round. Boynazarov is displeased after Adamchuck puts him against a ringpost for a little close-quarters work in the closing moments.

Adamchuck grazes with a leaping knee to the body but gets clipped by a counter right hand. Boynazarov keeps pressing forward and walks into a straight right, then a straight left after Adamchuck switches stances. An uppercut on the end of a combination touches Boynazarov’s chin. Another left hook-right uppercut combo finds its mark for the Mike’s Gym product. Boynazarov misses with a low kick and gets a hard one in return. A step-in knee lands to the face of Boynazarov, who counters with a left hook. Adamchuck closes out the round with a lightning-fast two-punch combo, a spinning back-kick to the body and another leaping knee.

Adamchuck continues to land the straight left, mixing in leg kicks and more frequent clinches as the final stanza wears on. Boynazarov keeps pushing forward, but when he gets too close to the ropes, Adamchuck clinches up and waits for the restart. Down to the final 30 seconds and Adamchuck is coming alive with combos again. He sidesteps a flying knee from Boynazarov and comes back to deck him with one last left hand.

Bellator 155-Pound Fight:
Adam Piccolotti vs. Salvador Becerra

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Piccolotti tapped out Becerra.
Becerra presses forward in the opening 30 seconds, landing a few kicks to the lead leg of the backpedaling Piccolotti. The lightweights test the range with jabs and hooks as they circle the cage, while Becerra continues to tack on more leg kicks. Piccolotti gives him a pair in return, but the second one is caught and he has to duck away as Becerra throws a big right hand. Becerra keeps walking him down to land a hard hook which instantly reddens Piccolotti’s left eye. A right cross smacks Piccolotti’s face, then another leg kick connects. Becerra touches his chin with a lunging left hand, and now Piccolotti’s right eye is lumped up, too. The fighters clinch and trade knees to the body, then Becerra rushes forward again to swing and miss with a heavy combo. Becerra backs up Piccolotti with a corkscrew left and overhand right, then does it again. Piccolotti is scoring with some jabs from his back foot, but Becerra is throwing with greater frequency and landing the bigger shots. With 50 seconds left, Piccolotti decides to dig an underhook and push Becerra against the cage. Becerra escapes after 20 seconds, touches Piccolotti with a jab and takes a spinning kick to the body.

Becerra is once again getting the better of the standup exchanges until one minute into the round, when Piccolotti drives inside and hits a takedown at the base of the fence. Piccolotti jumps on Becerra’s back and establishes both hooks, then tries to snake his right arm under the chin for a rear-naked choke. Becerra looks like he might be able to resist, leaning up against the fence, but after freezing for a few moments, he taps out to a neck crank. Adam Piccolotti gets the submission for an impressive come-from-behind finish.

The Official Result

Adam Piccolotti def. Salvador Becerra via Submission (Neck Crank) R2 1:47

Bellator 135-Pound Fight:
Gabriel Carrasco vs. Joe Neal

Round 1

Carrasco takes the center of the cage and threatens with big-swinging combinations while keeping Neal on the outside with kicks to the legs and body. Neal sidesteps a wild combo and decides to try and claim the center, but he misses with his punches. Neal whiffs on a kick and comes back up to be greeted by a Carrasco combination. A left high kick smacks the side of Neal’s head, sending him shooting for a takedown. Carrasco stuffs the shot and sweeps Neal out of the pocket with a left hand, then barely misses with the same left high kick. A left hand knocks Neal to the ground, but it looks like Carrasco took a finger to the eye in the exchange. Referee Jason Herzog pauses the action and calls in the doctor to check on Carrasco, who says he’s OK and wants to continue. Carrasco goes straight back to landing punches on Neal, forcing him to shoot for another takedown which Carrasco again denies.

Neal continues to throw punches so hard that he slips and slides on the mat, then a cracking left hand from Carrasco makes him stumble, too. Carrasco lands a hard kick to the right side of Neal’s ribcage and then slides his head off-center to avoid Neal’s counter. Midway through the round, Neal backs up Carrasco with a double jab. Carrasco pushes forward and gets Neal sliding again with another hard kick to the lead leg. Neal tries a late takedown, but he’s stuffed and kneed in the clinch as Carrasco separates. After the round, referee Herzog warns Carrasco for grabbing the fence to defend the takedown.

AKA's Carassco took the decision.
Carrasco shuts down another takedown attempt and stands up Neal to continuing adding on right hands. Neal tries another shot from his knees and gets sprawled all over, then slugged again as he stands. Carrasco puts a hard kick on the outside of Neal’s lead thigh as they hit the halfway point of the final round. Neal grabs for a leg again, but Carrasco just hops away. Neal gets out of the way of a big right hand, then sidesteps a spinning kick, but he’s not offering anything in return. Carrasco plunks him with a right hand over the top, resets and lands a hook, then a leg kick. Neal swings wildly, trying to do something in the final minute, but Carrasco dodges his strikes and stuffs yet another takedown attempt. Carrasco counters a slow right hand from Neal with a blistering overhand right. Both men are still swinging at the final bell, but this one should go the way of Carrasco on the scorecards.

Bellator 205-Pound Tournament Opening Round:
Muhammed Lawal vs. Linton Vassell

Round 1

Lawal takes a couple hooks on his glove and then cracks Vassell with a thunderous right cross which drops the Englishman to one knee. Vassell clambers back to his feet, still looking dazed, and he changes levels to try a takedown as “King Mo” drives forward swinging punches. The former college wrestler easily stuffs Vassell’s shot and then snaps back his head with another speedy right hand. An overhand right and a left hook knock Vassell’s head around, but “The Swarm” is hanging tough even as he eats hard shots. Lawal is taking his time, not rushing in to try and finish Vassell, instead staying on the outside and picking at the taller man with jabs. King Mo catches a kick and tries to catch Vassell with counter punches, but they’re deflected. Now, Lawal stuffs another shot and gets Vassell up against the fence to deliver body blows in close quarters. Lawal keeps tight in the clinch as Vassell tries to create some space and pull the Thai clinch to throw knees. Lawal separates and gets backed up by body kicks from Vassell as the last 80 seconds tick down. Lawal hurts his man with another hard left hand, and now Vassell covers up with his back against the fence. Lawal smells blood and he is swarming, battering Vassell with punches from the hip. Vassell slips to the ground but gets back up, surviving the onslaught to be pressed against the cage as the round ends.

Round 2

King Mo is in the finals.
Vassell flicks out jabs and front kicks which miss, then fires a left hand down the center and connects. Lawal keeps his left hand outstretched, feeling the range as he walks inside against his larger foe. One minute in, Vassell lands a leg kick and another left hand. Lawal is circling away from the majority of Vassell’s strikes, but the former Strikeforce champ’s offensive output has dropped off in the second frame. Lawal catches a kick and tries to clinch, but Vassell trips him to the ground. Back up comes Lawal, and now they’re halfway through the round. Vassell keeps missing with long, slow left hands, prompting Lawal to do a little shimmy with his hands down. Vassell slips to his knees and drives forward, and this time he’s able to elevate and slam Lawal to the canvas. Lawal nearly gives up his back but manages to spin out of it and winds up driving for his own takedown. Now it’s Lawal’s turn to plant Vassell on the mat, and he does so with authority. Inside the final minute now, Lawal tries to control Vassell on the ground. Vassell gets to a knee, then to his feet, but he can’t escape Lawal’s clinch. When Lawal feels Vassell grabbing for the Thai plum, the American drops levels and hits a double-leg takedown. Vassell works back up his feet just before the bell, and this one will go to the judges. As a reminder, per the tournament rules, in the case of a tie after two rounds, the judges will decide a winner based on “merit.”

Bellator 205-Pound Tournament Opening Round:
Phil Davis vs. Emanuel Newton

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Davis will meet King Mo in the finals.
The southpaw Newton steps forward early, touching Davis’ lead leg with light kicks. Davis sends a kick back at Newton’s body and has to yank it back as the former champion tries to grab hold. Newton has a left high kick blocked, tries to get into range with a side kick, but Davis circles away. Davis dodges a spinning backfist but gets clipped with a short right hand behind it. “Mr. Wonderful” decides to shoot for a takedown and has Newton on the canvas within seconds. Newton kneels, giving up his back and allowing Davis to sink his right hook. Newton stands and Davis tries to grapevine his leg but can’t keep him down. Another takedown for Davis follows right behind, and now Davis passes to side control on Newton’s right. Davis grabs for a kimura on the farside and steps over to straddle Newton’s head, but thay’s where he loses the hold. Newton rolls to his knees again while Davis stays in riding position to land a few right hands. Back up comes Newton, and straight back down he goes, this time rolled to the ground smoothly by Davis. When Davis tries a guillotine, Newton tries to turn the tables by driving forward on a single-leg. Davis easily reverses Newton’s momentum for another takedown, now with under a minute remaining. Newton sits up against the fence, then gets rolled over as Davis grabs another kimura. Davis lands in north-south position, wrenches the kimura and forces Newton to submit late in the round. Phil Davis will meet “King” Mo Lawal in the final of Bellator’s light heavyweight tournament.

The Official Result

Phil Davis def. Emanuel Newton via Submission (Kimura) R1 4:39

Glory Kickboxing 120-Pound Bout:
Keri Anne-Taylor Melendez vs. Hadley Griffith

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Melendez was too much for Griffith.
Melendez opens up with hard, high kicks before switching to body shots and finishing with a right hand. Two chopping leg kicks connect to the lead leg of Griffith, who holds a 5-inch height advantage but is being out-quicked here in the early going. Melendez goes body-head with a pair of hooks, backing Griffith into a corner. Griffith works her way back to the center, eating more punches upstairs as she does. Griffith gets knocked backward again by a flurry of punches from Melendez, who finishes by hooking a glove around Griffith’s neck and driving a knee to the body. Melendez misses with a right cross, gets caught with a counter from Griffith but walks right through it to finish the round with another big flurry.

Melendez wastes no time backing Griffith into a corner again with a barrage of punches, kicks and knees. Griffith works her way out of the bad spot on wobbly legs, and Melendez chases her around the ring, chopping her down with more heavy leg kicks. Griffith is doing very little here, getting beat to the punch every time by the much faster Melendez. With one minute left in the round, a series of punches doubles over Griffith, allowing Melendez to drive a knee to the head. Griffith escapes and gets a front kick to the knee, for which Melendez is warned by referee Dan Stell.

Teep kicks and whipping shots to the body keep Griffith from stepping into striking range. Right hands repeatedly sweep across the face of Griffith, who is pawing back with jabs but really has very little to offer. Melendez keeps up a busy pace through the final minute, never coasting and constantly keeping Griffith on the end of her kicks and punches. It’s a strong showing from Melendez, who will transition into the Bellator cage in 2016.

Daley won his Glory kickboxing debut.
Daley lands a chopping low kick followed by a pair of body shots on the left side. The southpaw Gonzalez tries a few times in the opening minute to walk into the pocket, but Daley keeps his guard high and slides backward. Daley keeps the kicks coming midway through the opening round, but now Gonzalez finds his mark with a nice left hand over the top. Gonzalez puts his mitts up to deflect a pair of hooks from “Semtex” and then gives the Englishman a hook to the body. Daley responds with a body kick and shots to both legs. Daley circles away and digs into Gonzalez’s gut with a big left hook. Gonzalez keeps coming, sticking a jab and a left hand, though he misses with windmilling punches afterward. Daley backs him off with a couple kicks to the ribs, then Daley slips to the ground while circling out of the corner. Referee Marcos Rosales deems it a slip and brings Daley back to his feet with about 90 seconds to go. Gonzalez barges Daley against the ropes to land a left hand and then has to give chase. Daley is on his bicycle, evading Gonzalez as they hit the last 30 seconds. Backed up against the ropes, Daley gets socked with a left hand and uses a leg kick to escape. Gonzalez goes to the body with a left hand, splits the gloves with an uppercut. At the 10-second mark, Daley pushes his way off the ropes and rushes Gonzalez with three big punches. Gonzalez slips them and gets the final say with a pair of punches at the bell. This one is headed to the judges for what should be an interesting decision.

Bellator 155-Pound Bout:
Josh Thomson vs. Mike Bronzoulis

Round 1

Thomson switches stances a few times before settling in orthodox and slugging his way forward with three or four big hooks. An uppercut clips Bronzoulis on the way out of the exchange, but Thomson doesn’t charge on his seemingly wobbled opponent. Bronzoulis lands a low kick inside that makes Thomson slip on the canvas, as fighters have been doing throughout the event. Bronzoulis slips throwing a kick, jumps back up and is floored by a Thomson takedown. Midway through the opening round, Thomson wraps up Bronzoulis’ legs and tries to keep him pinned down at the base of the cage. “The Punk” steps over to triangle Bronzoulis’ legs, but he’s pushed back to half guard. With 90 seconds on the clock, Thomson steps over to side control on Bronzoulis’ right side, but when he tries to take full mount, Bronzoulis gets a knee inside and reclaims half guard. Thomson triangles the bottom man’s legs again and begins working Bronzoulis’ body with short punches. Bronzoulis tries to swing back from underneath, but he’s getting marked up by Thomson’s short, grinding ground-and-pound.

Thomson put Bronzoulis away with a choke.
Bronzoulis takes a kick to the lead leg, tries to catch it but cannot. Thomson pulls the limb back and gives Bronzoulis three more hard chops to the leg over the next 30 seconds. Bronzoulis comes in to clinch and puts Thomson’s back against the cage, but Thomson whips around to take a standing rear-waistlock and uses it to drag “The Greek” to the ground. Now, Thomson works from Bronzoulis’ half guard with just under four minutes remaining in the middle round. He passes to side control on the left, but Thomson is blocked from mounting by the cage. The space created allows Bronzoulis to roll to his knees and drive on a single-leg of his own. Thomson snuffs out the shot in moments and bears down on the kneeling Bronzoulis with head pressure and right hands. Thomson tries to jump on Bronzoulis’ back, but he fails to secure the position and instead allows Bronzoulis to scramble up. Thomson hugs him against the fence, tries a trip takedown but can’t complete it. Finally, with 70 seconds on the clock, Thomson runs Bronzoulis back to the ground. Thomson goes straight to full mount and tries to slam Bronzoulis with elbows and punches, but Bronzoulis does well to cover up and control the wrists.

Bellator 205-Pound Title Fight:
Liam McGeary vs. Tito Ortiz

Round 1

Veteran referee “Big” John McCarthy is the third man in the cage for tonight’s title fight, which begins without a touch of gloves. Ortiz fakes a shot as they line up toe-to-toe in the center of the cage, then steps inside to test a clinch and has to dodge an uppercut. McGeary comes up short pumping his jab, takes a jab in return from Ortiz. The former UFC champion shoots for a takedown and runs McGeary to the ground, where he must fight out of a guillotine choke from the Englishman. Once his head is free, Ortiz flattens out McGeary and locks down his right arm to land punches up against the fence. The lanky McGeary keeps an open guard throughout, trying to shift and escape from underneath. Halfway through the round, Ortiz lands a series of three or four solid left hands to McGeary’s unprotected face. The Californian puts a forearm across McGeary’s throat and keeps him pinned to the canvas as the opening round ticks away. McGeary throws up a triangle, but Ortiz shucks it and passes to side control with 65 seconds on the clock. McGeary swings up his long legs and catches Ortiz in an armbar. Ortiz busts loose and pulls his arm away, but as he comes back down to ground-and-pound, McGeary catches him in an inverted triangle. Ortiz is trapped with nowhere to go, his face quickly turning red, and he’s forced to tap out. Liam McGeary retains his Bellator light heavyweight title with a sensational submission of the former UFC champ.
