Pat Casey vs. Nekruz Mirkhojaev

Round 1

Lightweights Casey and Mirkhojaev kick off the evening, with Yves Lavigne the referee. Apparently, Bellator did manage to get poor Sergei Kharitonov out of the cage at some point since last night. Casey and Mirkhojaev immediately meet in the center of the cage and start swinging for the fences, both men in orthodox stance, with Mirkhojaev occasionally switching stances. After the opening flurries, Mirkhojaev’s longer reach seems to be telling, but Casey is having decent success simply diving into close range and landing haymakers. With two minutes left, Mirkhojaev shoots a double-leg and is sprawled on soundly. Mirkhojaev grabs a guillotine from the clinch, seems to consider jumping guard, but Casey extricates himself. In the waning seconds, Casey steps in and lands a body kick that slaps loudly in the arena.

Round 2

Casey catches a kick in the early going and counters with a straight to Mirkhojaev’s face. The pace has slowed significantly since the frantic first round. Mirkhojaev is throwing single jabs with his hands held at his waist, but they are not stopping Casey from leaping in and scoring with hooks and straights. Mirkhojaev throws a slow spinning hook kick. With a minute left, Mirkhojaev catches a kick ad runs Casey to the floor. Casey springs back up against the fence with Mirkhojaev stuck to him, and is dragged back down. Mirkhojaev takes Casey’s back and boxes his ears for a moment before fishing for the rear-naked choke, but the round expires before he can cinch it up.

Round 3

Mirkhojaev uses a whizzer to toss Casey to the mat right away. Casey springs back up and Mirkhojaev switches to a double-leg. Casey grabs a front headlock, but Mirkhojaev pops out and drags Casey back down. He slips to Casey’s back, sinks both hooks and flattens him with his hips. Mirkhojaev softens Casey up with some ground-and-pound, then locks up a face crank. It looks extremely uncomfortable and sure enough, it is: Casey taps out from his knees, with Mirkhojaev glued to his back. Impressive ground work from Mirkhojaev.

Jesse Kosakowski vs. Rodolfo Rocha

Round 1

Welterweights Kosakowski and Rocha face off, with Yves Lavigne once again the third man in the cage. After a couple of tentative opening exchanges, Kosakowski shoots a double-leg on the much taller Rocha and drives him to the ground. He sets up in Rocha’s guard, as Rocha is aggressive from the bottom, looking to climb his legs up the smaller man’s back. Kosakowski passes to half-guard in a brief scramble, then makes his way to side control. Kosakowski isolates Rocha’s arm and looks to be working for a straight armbar. Rocha reverses position and Kosakowski switched to looking for a kneebar. He loses it and Rocha is on top in Kosakowski’s full guard. Kosakowski is seated against the fence, trying to stand, and finally works off the fence and reverses. Kosakowski hops on Rocha’s back, sinks his hooks, but gets too high and the Brazilian slips out the back. The round ends with Rocha on top, in Kosakowski’s guard. Wild round full of scrambles.

Round 2

In the opening second, Rocha looks to maintain distance with jabs and front kicks. Kosakowski leaps in and lands a lead right hand, then does so again. 90 seconds in, Kosakowski drops levels and plows Rocha to the canvas effortlessly. Kosakowski sets up in Rocha’s open guard and throws short punches to the ribs. Kosakowski goes upstairs with an elbows that opens Rocha’s face up. He’s bleeding heavily in an instant. Rocha turns to his side, then gives his back. Kosakowski locks on a body triangle immediately and cinches up a rear-naked choke. It’s tight and Rocha taps almost instantly. Dominant ground work by Jesse Kosakowski.

Vinicius de Jesus vs. Rodolfo Barcellos

Round 1

Welterweights Barcellos and De Jesus take the cage, with Todd Anderson overseeing the proceedings. Both men throw hard single strikes from orthodox stance in the opening minute, with De Jesus landing several very hard right low kicks. De Jesus is the one coming forward, as Barcellos gives ground, looks to counter and circles away from the fence. Halfway through the round, De Jesus drops Barcellos with lead right hand. He gives chase and flurries on the ground, but Barcellos recovers quickly and De Jesus elects to let him up. They go back to striking and De Jesus resumes chopping away at Barcellos’ lead leg. One of those kicks takes Barcellos off his feet, but De Jesus lets him stand. He drops Barcellos with another right hand, pounces once again, but this time there’s no recovery. De Jesus pounds away until referee Anderson is forced to stop the beating.

Tyrell Fortune vs. Ryan Pokryfky

Round 1

Heavyweights Fortune and Pokryfky square off with referee Leon Roberts overseeing, and engage in a wary boxing match through the first minute, with little in the way of kicks and no takedown attempts from Fortune, the decorated wrestler. Two minutes in, Fortune decks Pokryfky with a right hand, pounces and flurries, but elects to back off and let Pokryfky back up. A few seconds later he catches him with another right. Pokryfky crumples, Fortune nails him with a knee on the way down, then jumps all over him with punches until referee Roberts pulls him off a few seconds later. Tyrell Fortune looks dominant in running his professional record to 6-0.

Kemran Lachinov vs. Kastriot Xhema

Round 1

Xhema and Lachinov face off in a 165-pound catchweight bout, with Kevin MacDonald the referee. Lachinov drives for an immediate takedown and Xhema grabs a front headlock, Lachinov presses Xhema against the fence, still looking for the takedown, and when they disengage, nails him with a punch on the break. Xhema falls and Lachinov dives on him. Lachinov lands in side control and when Xhema scrambles, he moves to North-South position and locks on a choke. Lachinov spends a full minute cinching and adjusting the choke, but the tap is not forthcoming. Lachinov spins back to side control with about a minute left and throws short knees while looking for a possible arm to isolate. With ten seconds left, Lachinov suddenly swings onto Xhema’s back and sinks his hooks. He throws a couple of punches on the turtled Xhema, but the round ends before anything else can happen.

Round 2

Xhema is showing a nasty hematoma to open the second frame. In the first exchange, it’s Xhema who brings the fight to the floor. Xhema is on top, looking to drop punches, but Lachinov stays calm and grabs a leg. He’s looking for a kneebar when Xhema taps rather unexpectedly. Potential injury.

Reginaldo Felix vs. Justin Sumter

Round 1

185-pounders Sumter and Felix engage at the command of referee Yves Lavigne. Sumter attempts a flying knee in the opening 30 seconds, but it doesn’t land. They settle into a more conventional rhythm, with the southpaw Sumter and orthodox Felix exchanging single kicks. Felix lands an inside leg kick that spins Sumter halfway around. Felix crushes Sumter with a right hand, dropping him. Felix gives chase, flurries and Sumter scrambles to his feet and retreats. Sumter recovers against the fence and begins throwing back. Both men are landing big shots. With about a minute left, Sumter grabs the back of Felix’s neck hockey-style and mugs him with a nasty uppercut. In the waning seconds, both men eye each other warily. Crazy first round.

Round 2

After a brief delay for the cageside doctor to examine Sumter -- unclear what he was checking -- the middleweights engage. Felix looks tired. Sumter shoots a double-leg, but Felix sprawls. Sumter switches to a body lock and dumps him at the base of the fence. Sumter is in Felix’s loose half guard, throwing short strikes while trying to drag his knee across Felix’s belly and move into mount. Felix briefly turns and attempts to push off the fence with his feet, and Sumter gets back into half guard, briefly looking to grab a head and arm. With two minutes left, Sumter passes to mount. Felix tries to scramble and explode out, but Sumter slips to the back and grabs a rear-naked choke. After a brief struggle, Felix taps out.

Demetrius Plaza vs. Andrews Rodriguez

Round 1

Welterweights Plaza -- who is making his professional debut -- and Rodriguez will close out the preliminary portion of Bellator 216 under the watchful eye of referee Todd Anderson. The longer Rodriguez is giving Plaza trouble in the early going with his lateral movement and low kicks. Plaza clips Rodriguez with a wide right hook that stumbles him. Plaza pursues him to the ground and after a brief scramble, sets up shop in full mount against the fence. Plaza throws punches to the head, but Rodriguez manages to regain half-guard. Rodriguez explodes to his feet but Plaza stays glued to him and uses an overhook to toss him back to the mat. Plaza ends up in mount again and looks to secure an armbar, but Rodriguez escapes out the back. Plaza scrambles and ends up in mount yet again. With under a minute left, the action slows, with Plaza not making any overt moves for a submission, simply throwing a few short strikes while Rodriguez locks him down with both arms.

Round 2

Rodriguez is bouncing on his toes to open the second round, giving ground and looking to keep out of range. Rodriguez throws a head kick that glances off Plaza’s guard harmlessly. 90 seconds in, Rodriguez is still bouncing, hands at his waist, throwing low kicks and the occasional jab. Plaza manages to initiate a clinch and Rodriguez runs him to the fence. The two exchange hard knees to the legs and body against the fence for a full minute. Plaza has an overhook on Rodriguez’s right arm and is looking to turn out and use it to throw him, but Rodriguez is relentless in pressing him against the cage. The crowd grows restive with less than a minute left in the round. They briefly exchange punches before the 10-second clapper, but the round expires with no more real action.

Round 3

Round 3 opens as the second did, with Rodriguez bouncing on the outside as the shorter Plaza gives chase. Neither man is throwing much offense, with Rodriguez trying a spinning kick and Plaza dishing in with a few single punches. Plaza secures a takedown a minute in, and nails Rodriguez with an elbow to the temple. Rodriguez opens his guard and throws strikes from his back, and Plaza passes to half guard. Plaza chips away with elbows and hammer fists while trying to advance to mount. Rodriguez stuffs him back to full guard, which he closes. Perhaps exhausted, the two welterweights seem content to swing at each other from guard, neither looking to escape or advance. With under a minute left, Plaza postures up and Rodriguez snatches an armbar. Plaza escapes and lands back in Rodriguez’s guard, where they will remain until the horn, the first fight of the night to go the distance.

Valerie Loureda vs. Colby Fletcher

Round 1

Loureda and Fletcher engage immediately, and it is Fletcher wading in and forcing the taekwondo phenom to back up in the opening seconds. Loureda is throwing straight one-twos and kicks to the leg and body. Within the first minute, Fletcher has caught two kicks and used them to close and step in with punches. Loureda is circling, looking to counter. Out of nowhere, Loureda lands a one-two to the chin and a short kick to the liver of Fletcher, who crumples. Loureda pounces, lands in side control, and throws several dozen wild hammerfists to Fletcher, who rolls to her side and turtles up. Referee Kevin MacDonald steps in and pulls Loureda off, and Bellator’s newest prospect goes to 1-0 in her professional career, sobbing uncontrollably.

Yaroslav Amosov vs. Erick Silva

Round 1

Undefeated prospect Amosov and eternal prospect Silva open their welterweight feature bout with referee Yves Lavigne looking on. Silva is the one advancing in the early going as they trade low kicks in matching orthodox stances. Silva is measured but aggressive, and one of his punches has opened a serious cut over Amosov’s right eye in the first minute or so. Amosov clinches and, after several tries, trips Silva to the canvas. Silva promptly springs back up and disengages. Amosov grabs another clinch and runs Silva to the fence, but Silva extricates himself again. With a minute left, Amosov clips Silva with an overhand right that has him stumbling away, but he does not press the issue.

Round 2

In the first exchange of the second round, Silva catches a kick and uses it to dump Amosov to his seat, but does not follow him down. 90 seconds in, Amosov takes Silva’s back in the clinch and hustles him to the fence. Amosov wraps Silva’s waist and trips him to the floor at the base of the fence, sinking one hook as he does so. Silva is simply sitting against the fence, with Amosov half-kneeling on him. Silva explodes to his feet, but Amosov returns him to the floor with the rear waistlock. Amosov sets up again against the fence, staying heavy on top. He pulls Silva out of his seated position and goes to work from half guard. Silva sticks Amosov in full guard shortly before the 10-second clapper, and they finish out the round there.

Round 3

Silva opens the third round aggressive on the feet, landing a hard low kick that has Amosov switching to southpaw for a moment. Amosov rushes into the clinch and, same as in the second round, gets Silva to turn his back. This time, Silva escapes before being dumped to the canvas. A minute later, Amosov enters, drops levels and uses a high-crotch lift to deposit Silva on his back at the base of the fence. The position is similar to Round 2, with Amosov putting pressure on a seated Silva, throwing short strikes and trying to pull him away from the fence. Silva stands and Amosov hoists him and throws him back to the floor. The position repeats yet again with 90 seconds left, then a third time, a little less amplitude on the throw each time, as both men are clearly fatigued. The final bell sounds, and Amosov has likely run his record to 21-0 with a dominant performance.

Round 1

Vitaly Minakov, the undefeated former Bellator heavyweight champion who never lost his belt in the cage, returns against the resurgent Kongo, with Todd Anderson overseeing the affair. Minakov stalks forward with Kongo, wary of the takedown, circling and throwing jabs and kicks. Minakov rushes in a briefly gives up his back standing. Kongo lets him disengage. Minakov comes in and clinches behind a haymaker and they exchange knees. Kongo lands his signature technique, and referee Anderson breaks them up and gives Minakov time to recover. When they re-engage, it’s more of the same: Minakov attempting to rush in behind strikes and clinch, Kongo trying to counter him on the entry. Minakov pops Kongo with a right and Kongo falls back. Minakov chases him down and looks from a front headlock, but Kongo uses a double-leg to stand back up and disengage. With less than a minute left, Kongo is circling away, giving Minakov room. Minakov lands a glancing hook and clinches a final time right before the bell.

Round 2

Round 2 begins as the first ended, with Kongo giving ground and looking for the counter while Minakov tries to clinch. Very little offense in the first minute. Correction: very little offense in the first two minutes. The crowd can be heard booing, to the point that the announcers comment on it. With a minute left, the booing is becoming deafening and Kongo is basically in full retreat. As if on cue, Minakov rushes in and is clipped by Kongo. Kongo runs him to the fence and throws a few shots before they disengage. The round ends, mercifully.

Round 3

Kongo is looking alive to start the final round. He stings Minakov with an outside leg kick, then another, then another. Minakov is chasing and being tagged, then finds Kongo and runs him to the mat. 90 seconds in, Minakov set up in Kongo’s half guard. Kongo is controlling the Russian’s posture, but not doing much to escape, sweep or inflict damage from the bottom. Minakov is looking for an Ezekiel choke from the top, appears to have it locked up, but Kongo resists while throwing short punches to Minakov’s ribs. Kongo escapes to the feet with under 45 seconds left and staggers Minakov with a knee to the chin. Minakov stumbles back as Kongo nails him with two more knees, half-dead on the feet with exhaustion, but the final bell sounds. Rousing end to a miserable round.

Round 1

The two 40-something legends open up the fight very wary of each other, handfighting as Nelson walks his man down. Nelson pushes Filipovic to the fence and drops levels to the Croatian’s waist, but “Cro Cop” shucks him off. Nelson is persistent, keeping the clinch and keeping the action close to the fence. Halfway through the round, Nelson nails “Cro Cop” with a knee to the chin, then another. Filipovic answers with an uppercut inside. With a minute left, “Cro Cop” pushes Nelson to the fence, lands a level elbow and some short punches. They break and “Cro Cop” smacks Nelson with a loud body kick. Nelson grabs a single-leg and runs Filipovic to the fence and spends the balance of the round working for a takedown that never comes.

Round 2

Nelson comes forward once again to open the second round, throwing long, lunging hooks. “Cro Cop” gives room and looks to counter. A minute in, Nelson bursts forward and hustles Filipovic to the fence. He is looking for the takedown, but “Cro Cop” smashes him with an elbow over the top. They disengage and it’s Nelson throwing a hard body kick. Filipovic throws a beautiful straight left down the pipe that stops the advancing Nelson in his tracks, but only for a moment before the American resumes his inexorable advance. “Cro Cop” throws his signature left high kick, but it clatters off Nelson’s high guard. Nelson tries a head kick then rushes in behind it, plowing Filipovic into the cage. Filipovic grabs a front headlock but abandons it quickly. He reverses Nelson against the fence and hits him with an uppercut. As the 10-second clapper sounds, “Cro Cop” lunges in with an uppercut to the body. Nelson answers with another high kick before the round ends.

Round 3

Nelson walks down Filipovic to begin Round 3, throwing single hooks while trying to steer the Croatian into the fence. Both men are breathing with mouths wide open, but still throwing strikes. Nelson runs “Cro Cop” to the fence and drops for a double-leg, but Filipovic uses underhooks to throw him off. The process repeats. 90 seconds left, and “Cro Cop” stumbles, apparently from sheer fatigue. Nelson wades forward, grabs him, and finally secures the clean takedown he has been seeking for 14 minutes. Nelson sets up shop in Cro Cop’s guard, trying posturing up against the fence, but Filipovic does a good job of avoiding serious danger until the final bell.

Round 1

Page and Daley open the main event with Daley circling the outside while “MVP” stands in his trademark side-on stance, hands completely at his side. There isn’t a single strike thrown with intent in the first 90 seconds. Page alternates between giving ground and springing at Daley. Halfway through the first round, there has still been virtually no engagement. Page flicks out a single side kick at Daley’s midsection. Page switches stances, backing Daley’s heels to the fence. With less than a minute left, neither man has thrown much. Page sticks Daley with a lefty jab. At the 10-second clapper, Page tries a flying knee but misses, and the crowd is booing lustily as the two return to their corners.

Round 2

Round 2 opens much the same as the first. Page bouncing around the center of the cage, switching stances frequently, Daley circling outside. Page is throwing little offense and Daley is throwing less. Page flicks out a kick that strikes Daley squarely in the face, cleanly but with little force. Daley rushes Page to the fence. Page uses over- and underhooks to deny Daley position and leverage to pull him down. They disengage. Daley shoots a long double leg, but succeeds in hauling the taller man to the ground near the fence. Daley sets up atop “MVP,” and Page is content to tie him up as best he can, blunting Daley’s efforts at ground-and-pound. Daley lands a hard level elbow while basically sitting in Page’s lap, then another. With less than 30 seconds left, Page gets up and Daley nails him with a hook. Page stumbles away, more off-balance than rocked, but Daley pursues, clinches and lands a few more shots before the horn.

Round 3

Page appears a bit more businesslike to open the third round, still in the same stance, but moving forward with more purpose. After a few tense exchanges, Daley shoots a double, switches to a single and pushes “MVP” to the fence. They jockey for position there for a moment, then Daley elevates and slams Page to the canvas, landing in guard. Daley postures up and tries to drop blows, and Page takes the moment to scoot back to a seated position against the fence. With a minute left, it’s Daley still on top with Page controlling his posture. Daley muscles his way into some space and smashes the sitting “MVP” with a left, then another, then a third. Page gets some urgency and squirms his way to his feet before the round ends.

Round 4

Page is bouncing in side-on stance to open the championship rounds, hands still low, no longer switching but staying orthodox. He stings Daley with a long jab, then a straight right. Daley shoots a single-leg and is sprawled on, but sticks to Page and runs him to the floor, this time in the middle of the cage. Page closes his guard and works to control Daley’s posture. Daley looks to posture up and land strikes. Page throws his legs up for a triangle but Daley stands and disengages. Page stands, moves in and Daley unleashes a spinning elbow which misses. With a minute left, Page hauls Daley to the floor. He’s on top against the fence, peppering Daley with short elbows and punches. They’re still in that position as the round ends.

Page goes to the floor off-balance in the first exchange of the final round. Daley essays a few kicks from Ali-Inoki position, but eventually follows Page to the ground. Page appears to be looking for a triangle for a moment, but Daley defends. Page gets back to his feet and Daley stays on him. Page reverses and hops onto Daley’s back, grabbing an immediate no-hook rear-naked choke. Daley survives and Page secures better position, sinking his hooks. Daley escapes, and Page drags him back down, throwing short strikes. The round ends with Page throwing punches as Daley works back up. This one’s going to the judges.
