Bellator 48 Results and Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com will report from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., at approximately 7 p.m. ET with play-by-play and live results of Bellator 48, which is headlined by the Summer Series featherweight tournament final between Pat Curran and Marlon Sandro.

Tateki Matsuda vs. Saul Almeida

Round 1
Almeida presses the action as the fight gets under way. He backs Matsuda up with wide punches and a number of wild kicks. Not much lands early until Matsuda lands a stinging low kick. Almeida answers by charging in and clinching up along the cage. He goes to work on Matsuda’s legs with knees. Matsuda extricates himself from the cage and catches Almeida with a one-two. He follows up with a good body shot and Almeida shoots for a single in response. Matsuda avoids the shot and works knees to the body of Almeida from side control. Almeida gets to his feet but Matsuda shoots in and tries to get him to the mat. Almeida sprawls and tries to work his way to Matsuda’s back. He locks up a kimura and falls back to half guard but Matsuda defends. The round ends with Almeida trying to secure his second hook to fully take his opponent’s back. Sherdog scores the first round 10-9 for Matsuda.

Round 2
Almeida and Matsuda trade strikes to kick of the second round. Matsuda lands the first big shot with a kick to the body. He shoots to try to stymie a charging Almeida and locks up a single leg. Almeida defends and tries to work to the back of Matsuda. He gets two hooks and tries to sink a rear-naked choke but can’t elicit the tap. Almeida gives up one hook and Matsuda immediately capitalized and stands back up. The fight goes right back to the floor in the ensuing scramble and after a brief struggle Almeida gets his back again. He locks up a body triangle and works for the choke right up to the bell. Round two goes to Saul Almeida 10-9 on the Sherdog card.

Round 3
The fighters exchange kicks to the body as the final round gets underway. Matsuda lands another but Almeida catches it and takes him the ground. He sets up in Matsuda’s guard and intermittently works strikes as he looks for the pass. Almeida gets to half and cinches up a loose guillotine that Masuda shrugs his way out of. He sits up and grabs a single but Almeida goes right to his back as he did in the first and second rounds. Matsuda pushes him to his back as he defends a Kimura. Matsuda wriggles free yet again and rises to his feet. The fighters clinch up and Almeida grabs a front headlock before snapping Matsuda to the ground. The scramble is on yet again, this time Matsuda ends up on top with Almeida pinned on the cage. He unloads a slew of punches before he is reversed. Matsuda sets up in the tight guard of Almeida for the fight’s final 10 ticks and the horn sounds ending the opening bout. Sherdog scores the final frame 10-9 for Almeida.

Official scores: Peter Rogers and Cardo Urso see it 30-27, while Jon Bilyk has it 29-28 all for Almeida, who takes the unanimous decision.

Brett Oteri vs. Ryan Quinn

Round 1
Takedown by Ryan Quinn out of the gate, working in Oteri’s full guard. Quinn, an American Top Team product, briefly passes to side, but ends up back in guard. Quinn jumps to mount and takes the back as Oteri rolls, hooking a rear-naked choke in the process. The deep squeeze is on, and Oteri hangs on until losing consciousness. The official time of the technical submission is 1:49 in the first round.



Matt Nice vs. Andrew Calandrelli

Round 1
We are a minute in and there hasn’t been a significant strike thrown. Calandrelli seems content to take the center of the cage while Nice circles and throws pawing shots. Another minute passes and still very little in the way of meaningful action. That all changes with a hard counter left from Calandrelli. Nice tries to answer but gets caught with a glancing shot that sends him searching for a takedown. Calandrelli shrugs his attempt off and muscles him the ground where he locks up a key lock that takes a while but finally prompts a tapout from Nice at 3:55 of the first round.


Mark Griffin vs. Nik Fekete

Round 1
Fekete opens the action with a jab that is answered with a full broadside from Griffin. The local fighter blasts Fekete with rights and lefts that send him scooting back to the cage while covering up. He weathers the storm and plants Griffin with a double leg. After a brief scramble, Griffin is back up and Fekete clinches and pushes him into the cage. He drops for a double but just pulls Griffin's feet out from under him. As Griffin tries to stand, Fekete tries to take his back; he gets stalled but as Griffin attempts to stand again, he pounds him to the mat and sets up in his half guard. Griffin gets full guard for a moment but Fekete moves to side as the round closes. Sherdog scores the opening period 10-9 for Fekete.

Round 2
Griffin comes out a little more aggressive in the second stanza. He slugs away at Fekete along the cage but fails to land anything hard. He does catch what looks like a finger in his left eye as Fekete tries to defend. He is OK and the match continues without a break. Fekete attempts to get back to tried and true methods, shooting for a takedown. He gets Griffin to the mat and immediately sets up in a mounted crucifix. He punches to the face of Griffin with an unabated right hand. As soon as Fekete switches to the elbow referee Kevin Mulhall deems the match over and awards the win to Fekete at 3:12 of the second round.

Jeff Nader vs. Dan Cramer

Round 1
Cramer walks Nader down and clinches up in an under-over along the cage. Nader spins him and presses him into the fence. Cramer grabs a Thai plumb and Nader immediately takes a knee to avoid any shots to the head. Cramer takes advantage and pushes him all the way to the mat and pummels him with punches and elbows. Nader is completely defensive at this point as Cramer hammers away from half guard. He does look to be slowing down; the effect of the heavy volume of strikes he has been unloading. Cramer seems frustrated he can’t get the stoppage but quite a few of his blows were absorbed by the guard of Nader. The round closes with Cramer still slugging away on top. Sherdog scores the round 10-8 for Cramer.

Round 2
Cramer charges out of his corner but gets caught with a knee tap and is taken to the mat. Nader tries to lock up a guillotine but Cramer easily sweeps him and returns to assaulting his opponent from the top. He pins him along the cage and tries to pick his shots from half guard but can’t seem to find the big knockout shot. Eerily reminiscent of his past Bellator bouts, Cramer is in complete control but having problems looking for a finish. He finally passes and gets all the way to mount. Nader tries to sweep but can’t. He does, however, get back to half-guard. Cramer gets to side and slams a few punches to the head of Nader before the round closes. Cramer nabs round two on the Sherdog card by the score of 10-9.

Round 3
Cramer may have heard the boos in the crowd at the end of the first two rounds. He opens the third throwing bombs but can’t find the mark. Nader ducks under some big blows and answers with some big shots of his own. Cramer is stunned with a wild right hand that staggers him back into the cage. Nader then lands a crushing uppercut that wobbles him again. Mulhall intervenes after yet another devastating uppercut lands flush. Cramer is still on his feet and protests briefly. The end comes at 1:04 of the final round in a fight Cramer was clearly ahead in.

Rene Nazare vs. Juan Barrantes

Round 1
Nazare gives chase immediately, landing with both hands and cracking Barrantes with uppercuts and right hands. The Costa Rican is circling away, and it is all Nazare. The Brazilian is attacking with heavy hooks, snapping Barrantes' head back until he clinches. Nazare tries a foot sweep which is blocked, so he simply rams his foe into the cage. Two hard uppercuts lands for Nazare. Right cross from the Brazilian lands on Barrantes' ear. 90 seconds in, it's all Rene Nazare. More wild hooks light Barrantes up, prompting him to clinch once again. Nazare answers with one more right uppercut, and then changes levels and scoops Barrantes to the mat with a powerful double-leg. Barrantes looks for an armbar, but Nazare just smashes him with rights. Barrantes throws an upkick, but Nazare avoids its brunt, and lands another salvo of vicious right hands, blooding Barrantes between the eyes. The Bombsquad rep moves to half guard, and cracks Barrantes again. The Costa Rican throws up a triangle attempt, only to get crushes with more fire on top. Barrante posts one hand on the mat and tries to walk up the fence, but Nazare jams more right hands into his face. Nazare gets head control and tries to turn to take the back. Barrantes defends, and Nazare locks up a guillotine which Barrantes escapes before the bell.

Round 2
Left cross-right hook for Nazare lands, but the Costa Rican surprises Nazare with a counter that snaps his head back and stems his offense. Both fighters looking arm-weary, throwing wide hooks at one another and missing. Nazare changes levels and gets another double-leg takedown in the middle of the cage with just under four minutes in the round. Nazare lands short elbows, permitting him to pass to half guard. He tries to trap Barrantes' nearside arm, but he extricates himself. Hammerfists register for the Brazilian, but he can't seem to get past Barrantes' half guard. Nazare is warned by referee Keith Peterson for getting his fingers into Barrantes' eyes. Barrantes, undaunted, hip sweeps and manages to get back to his feet. Nazare quickly looks for another takedown, and finishes it quickly, powering through a Barrantes' guillotine attempt. The last 45 seconds feature more right hands landing for Nazare from half guard until the horn.

Between rounds, the ringside physician advises referee Keith Peterson to stop the bout, on account of Barrentes' left eye having been cut and swollen shut. Rene Nazare is the winner by doctor stoppage at the end of the second round.


Ricco Rodriguez vs. Seth Petruzelli

Round 1
>An early Rodriguez head kick is blocked, and Petruzelli lands a low kick to respond. Push kick by Petruzelli falls short. Lunging one-two for Petruzelli whistles wide. A spinning back kick from Petruzelli comes just as Rodriguez looks to kick himself, and Rodriguez catches the heel of Petruzelli right to the groin. He instantly hits the mat on all fours, and Dan Miragliotta gives him his five minutes to recover. Rodriguez only takes 60 seconds, and regains his feet.

Rodriguez throws a kick to the body that lands, but Petruzelli catches the leg. Rodriguez pulls guard, and instantly goes for double overhooks from butterfly guard. Both men regain their feet, and Petruzelli brushes Rodriguez with another head kick, which causes "Suave" to pose and posture. A side kick high for Petruzelli, and a low kick land, followed by three right hands. Petruzelli continues to stick and move, while cracking Rodriguez with low kicks. The former UFC champion runs Petruzelli into the fence, looking for a takedown. Petruzelli breaks the clinch, and the Floridian goes right back to using his distance to land kicks and right hands. Petruzelli makes like he's going for a spinning back kick, but comes up high with more a wheel kick. He follows with another that puts Rodriguez on his heels. Rodriguez tries to jump in, and gets smashed with a short right hook. Petruzelli swarms with hammerfists, forcing Dan Miragliotta into action and polishing off the former UFC champion at 4:21 of the first round.

Cole Konrad vs. Paul Buentello

Round 1
Konrad sticks his jab out early, popping Buentello's head back a touch. Buentello continues to circle to his right as the southpaw Konrad approaches. Konrad continues to try to limber up and close the distance, but seems frustrated by Buentello's passivity. Buentello finally lands a right, his first real offense of the bout. Scattered boos come in from the Mohegan Sun crowd with two minutes to fight in the round. Lots of sizing one another up, but little action. Buentello jumps in with a glancing uppercut, but doesn't follow up. Konrad lands a one-two, and follows with a low kick. Jab-low kick for Konrad. Buentello resumes circling to his right, and Konrad seems bemused by his opponent's tactics. Bell.

Round 2
Boos rain down from the crowd immediately as the round begins. Konrad lands a body kick and a jab. Buentello now moving forward and pawing with his own jab after a tentative first frame. Inside low kick lands for Konrad, breaking some 45 seconds of staring and inactivity. Another inside low kick for Konrad follows after another idle 30 seconds. Konrad continues to be the more active fighter, as Buentello is moving forward, but not throwing any strikes. Overhand right for Buentello forces a clinch from Konrad. Konrad lands a knee, but Buentello escapes the overhand right on the exit. Konrad bounces on his toes and resets for the umpteenth time. He lands an outside low kick, and dodges a right uppercut from Buentello.

Right cross from Konrad lands, and he follows up, attacking Buentello with punches along the fence, but neither man can land clean. The bell ends another tepid frame.

Round 3
Both men active early, pumping their jabs. Konrad lands a roundhouse, then a teep to the body of the Texan. Buentello lands a short hook, but his head is snapped back by another Konrad jab. Buentello lands two jabs, but gets smacked with a Konrad counter as he comes in. Buentello hits the canvas in a spill, and "The Polar Bear" dives on his prey. Konrad gets over-under control around the neck and takes Buentello's back, briefly locking up a partially-applied rear-naked choke on Bunetello. Buentello escapes, but Konrad stays on top, claiming half guard with three minutes to go. Busy right hands from Konrad keep Buentello defensive off of his back. Konrad continues to chip away with right hands, trying to pass. Unexplicably, referee Dan Miragliotta stands the pair up with just under a minute to fight. Buentello lands a right hook to the body, and Konrad smacks him with an uppercut. Buentello attacks again, and eats another uppercut. "The Headhunter" lands a lunging uppercut of his own, but Konrad clinches and waits out the clock from there.

Bellator Summer Series Featherweight Tournament Final
Pat Curran vs. Marlon Sandro

Round 1
Wild overhand right for Sandro thuds into Curran's arms. Curran lands a right of his own and glances. Hard Sandro low kick lands. Curran tries to respond with a teep, but Sandro partially catches it and abates the blow. Jump knee from Curran, and Sandro cracks him with a right hand. Sandro looks for his trademark right uppercut, and catches a kick to the groin that halts the bout for all of five seconds before Sandro tells referee Keith Peterson he's good to continue. Left hook for Sandro glances, but can't land his following right uppercut. They duel low kicks, Sandro landing the deeper with his shin. Sandro tries to double his left hook, but Curran ducks underneath. Two spinning back kicks from the Brazilian, but fly wide. Curran triples his jab, and the Brazilian avoids each and every one. Great countering and head movement thus far by Marlon Sandro. Low kick for Curran lands upstairs. He tries to land a low one, and Sandro responds with one of his own. Right uppercut from Sandro smacks Curran's gloves. Two push kicks land for Curran, and Sandro shoots a double-leg takedown at the bell.

Round 2
Outside low kicks land for both men. They throw windmill shots to follow, but neither lands. A jab lands for each, then another outside low kick for each. One-two for Sandro glances, but Curran thumps him with an overhand right. Sandro diving into the pocket now, and Curran countering. However lands a big right that puts Curran on his heels, and the Brazilian is comfortable now, coming forward with vicious punches. Sandro's punches aren't landing the cleanest, but Curran is cut around the left eye and he's almost entirely defensive now. The Illinois-based fighter gets over-unders and pushes the Nova Uniao fighter into the fence. Sandro thwarts him, however, and they resume standing. Curran throws a weak push kick, but rips back with a head kick that is only partially blocked by Sandro. Double jab, and a kick to the body by Curran. Sandro swoops at him with a massive left hook, rapiering across Curran's stomach. Sandro jumps in with another body shot, and Curran narrowly misses with a counter. Curran triples his jab and then goes upstairs again, and this time he hits paydirt. A right roundhouse kick to the head absolutely shatters Sandro, who is stone cold unconscious the minute the shin hits his face. Sandro falls supine, and Curran cracks him with three more punches before referee Keith Peterson can torpedo him away from the ruined Brazilian at four minutes even into the second round. Pat Curran claims his second Bellator tournament win with one of 2011's finest knockouts.
