Bibiano Fernandes Taps Kevin Belingon to Retain One Championship Bantamweight Title

By Brian Knapp Jan 23, 2016
One Championship bantamweight titleholder Bibiano Fernandes needed less than a round to prove he was superior to Kevin Belingon.

Fernandes submitted Belingon with a first-round kimura to retain his title in the One Championship 37 “Dynasty of Champions” main event on Saturday at Helong Stadium in Changsha, China. Fernandes (19-3) put away his latest challenger 4:04 into round one, as his career-best winning streak reached 11 fights.

Belingon (13-5) was in trouble within seconds. Fernandes executed a pair of takedowns, advanced to side control and smothered the Filipino standout with topside pressure. The two men slid toward the base of the cage, where the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt latched the kimura and forced the tapout.

Fernandes, 35, has not lost since his decision defeat to Hiroyuki Takaya on New Year’s Eve in 2010 -- a span of five years and 23 days.

Meanwhile, Ma Hao Bin choked Bu Huo You Xia unconscious with a first-round guillotine choke to win the Changsha bantamweight tournament. Bin (2-0) brought it to a close 68 seconds into round one. The 22-year-old Jincan Defense Club representative advanced to the final with a 27-second guillotine-induced submission on Wu Ting Shen (0-1) in the semifinals. Xia (1-1) had punched his ticket to the final with a bulldog choke submission 2:26 into the first round of his pairing with Cai Chang Bo (0-1).

Elsewhere, teenaged Tajikistani prospect Muin Gafurov kept his record pristine and disposed of Toni Tauru with third-round punches in their bantamweight showcase. Gafurov (10-0) finished it 77 seconds into round one, the 19-year-old perhaps cementing himself as the No. 1 contender to Fernandes’ throne. Tauru (10-3-1) has dropped back-to-back bouts.

In other action, Li Kai Wen (5-2) earned a unanimous decision over Yang Sen (2-1) in their three-round featherweight clash; Asuka Mikami (13-3-2) took a unanimous verdict from Roy Doliguez (6-3) in a three-round flyweight encounter; Ming Yen Sung (5-1) submitted Sunoto Peringkat (3-2) with a guillotine choke 31 seconds into the first round of their featherweight tilt; Ze Wu (4-2) wiped out Zhang You Liang (0-1) with soccer kicks 4:17 into round one of their flyweight matchup; and Tang Da Pan (1-0) knocked out Zhou Biao (0-1) with a slam 59 seconds into the first round of their Changsha bantamweight tournament alternate match.
