Bisping's Middleweight Move Official

Dec 15, 2007
It appears Michael Bisping (Pictures) needed to lose before agreeing to shed 20 pounds and fight at middleweight.

Speaking with UFC.com, Bisping, who entered the UFC as a light heavyweight after winning season three of "The Ultimate Fighter," said it was the first defeat of his career in November to Rashad Evans (Pictures) that finally prompted a move from 205 to 185 pounds.

Said Bisping: "My performance again made me go back and forth about going to middleweight but, in the end, this is my career and how I make a living, and although it isn't that I can't hack it at 205 pounds, it doesn't make sense to give every opponent an advantage when I don't have to."

The British fighter, who fell to 14-1 after finishing on the wrong side of a split decision verdict to Evans, will help bolster a division that until recently seemed starved for contenders.

Bisping said he should make his middleweight debut in the Octagon sometime early next spring.
