Bowles: Hand Unbroken, Despite Initial Concern

Bowles finally caught a break, but in a good way.
The former WEC bantamweight champion tweeted Tuesday that, despite an initial self-diagnosis, he did not suffer a broken right hand in his UFC 132 victory over Takeya Mizugaki on Saturday night. Sherdog.com confirmed the news with the fighter shortly after the Twitter posting.
According to Bowles, he may have sustained an injury to a tendon, but his hand was not broken. Bowles said his doctor gave him a cream to rub into his hand and instructed him to refrain from throwing power punches. The fighter will revisit with his physician in about two weeks for an update.
Bowles revealed to his corner during the rest period before the third round of his bout with Mizugaki that he thought he had broken his hand. It is unknown exactly when the injury took place, but it may have occurred during an exchange in which Bowles caught a leg kick and cracked Mizugaki with a solid straight right hand. Bowles would go on to walk away from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with a unanimous decision victory, his second straight win.
The onetime champ has had trouble with his right paw before, breaking it during his first and only WEC title defense against Dominick Cruz in March 2010. Bowles was forced to retire after the second round of their WEC 47 contest due to a broken right hand, making Cruz the new champion. The loss to Cruz marks the only time Bowles has tasted defeat as a professional.
