Boxing: Daniel Jacobs vs. Peter Quillin Set for Dec. 5 in Brooklyn

Yet another major fight in the boxing world will take place this year. Promoter DiBella Entertainment and cable network Showtime on Wednesday announced a super fight of sorts between WBA middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs and former champ Peter Quillin which will take place Dec. 5 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The intriguing match will be televised live on Showtime beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

The potential matchup has been brewing for years, dating back to when Quillin (32-0-1, 23 KOs) was the reigning WBO 160-pound titlist. Jacobs was getting his career back on track after first losing to Dmitry Pirog and then battling cancer, where he stepped away from the sweet science for 18 months. Jacobs has been on a collision course with “Kid Chocolate,” and now that he holds one of the major belts, the time has come to see who is the best Brooklyn-based middleweight.

“There is no doubt this is going to be one of the biggest fights Brooklyn has ever seen,” Jacobs stated in a release. “Peter and I go back a long time, but this is business. I’m the champion and he’s the challenger. I’m going to do everything I can to win on Dec. 5 and show the world that I’m the best Brooklyn has to offer.”

Quillin relinquished his title in September 2014 for myriad reasons but has coveted being the true champion in the weight class for years. He’ll get his chance to prove it against “The Miracle Man” when they finally lock horns.

“The fans have waited a long time for this fight and now it’s finally here,” said Quillin. “I was back in the gym on Monday after my fight against [Michael] Zerafa preparing for Dec. 5. I know there is so much at stake for me -- a belt and Brooklyn bragging rights. It’s going to be a night to remember for me and for all of Brooklyn.”

Quillin knocked out Zerafa in the fifth round on Sept. 12 after fighting to a disputed draw with Andy Lee in April. The Chicago native holds impressive wins over the likes of Winky Wright, Gabriel Rosado, Hassan N’Dam and Antwun Echols.

Jacobs has won 10 in a row, including an impressive second-round stoppage of Sergio Mora in August. He also holds wins over Caleb Truax, Ishe Smith and Jarrod Fletcher.

Also set for the main card is a lightweight showdown between Denis Shafikov (36-1-1, 19 KOs) and Rances Barthelemy (23-0, 13 KOs) for the vacant IBF title. On top of that, WBA featherweight champ Jesus Cuellar (27-1, 21 KOs) will defend his title against Jonathan Oquendo (26-4, 16 KOs).
