Boxing: Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin to Fight Daniel Jacobs in March

By Mike Sloan Dec 17, 2016
The resurgence of boxing will continue into 2017 where elite fighters are fighting elite fighters. With Leo Santa Cruz looking to even the score with Carl Frampton in a January rematch and Keith Thurman set to fight Danny Garcia a few weeks later, it was a matter of time before another early ’17 super fight was announced. On Saturday afternoon, it was made official: Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will take on Daniel Jacobs.

Both middleweight champions took to Twitter to announce that their showdown was set in stone. The battle will anchor an HBO Pay-Per-View event in Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 18. Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) will put his WBC, WBA and IBF titles on the line against Jacobs, the WBA’s mandatory challenger.

Jacobs took to social media to tweet the following: “It’s official me vs. @GGGBoxing for my next fight!!!”

Golovkin followed suit with, “It’s official, I’m fighting Danny Jacobs on March 18 at MSG @TheGarden NY on HBO ppv, see you there!” on Twitter.

Golovkin has been ransacking the middleweight division for years, having scored 23 consecutive knockouts. He last fought in September where he dominated welterweight champion Kell Brook before stopping him in the fifth. Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) scored two quick knockouts in the past year as he first flattened Peter Quillin and then Sergio Mora.
