Mexican stars Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares will clash on Aug. 29 in what should be a can’t-miss all-action brawl at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Slated to headline the next Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN event, their battle has already been tagged as a potential “Fight of the Year” candidate.
Now, the undercard has taken shape.
It was revealed this week that the telecast will open with an explosive super bantamweight brawl between Mexican knockout artists Hugo Ruiz (35-2, 30 KOs) and Julio Cesar Ceja (28-1, 26 KOs). After losing to Koki Kameda in his lone world title fight, Ruiz has responded with four straight wins, three by devastating knockout. Ceja is in a similar position. He, too, lost in his only world title bid -- to Jamie McDonnell -- but he has won five in a row, with four coming via KO.
Also on the card will be popular Mexican slugger Alfredo Angulo (23-5, 19 KOs), as he takes on Hector Munoz (23-15-1, 14 KOs) in a middleweight affair. After dropping three consecutive bouts, Angulo got back on track to knock out Delray Raines in June. He is expected to take out Munoz, a New Mexico native who has dropped 14 of 19 dating back to 2008.
The rest of the undercard follows:
Lightweights: Alejandro Luna (18-0, 13 KOs) vs. Yakubu Amidu (19-7-2, 17 KOs)
Welterweights: Jessie Roman (19-2, 9 KOs) vs. Hector Serrano (17-4, 5 KOs)
Super Middleweights: Paul Mendez (19-2-2, 9 KOs) vs. Andrik Saralegui (19-2, 15 KOs)
Middleweights: Brian Castano (12-0, 9 KOs) vs. Jonathan Batista (14-6, 7 KOs)
Middleweights:Alan Castano (8-0, 5 KOs) vs. Thomas Howard (8-4, 4 KOs)
Welterweights: Anthony Flores (8-0, 5 KOs) vs. Curtis Morton (3-4-3)
Bantamweights: Antonio Santa Cruz (Debut) vs. Isaiah Najera (0-1)
