Boxing News: Alvarado Arrested on Weapons Charge Just Weeks Before Trilogy Bout

By C.J. Tuttle Jan 6, 2015
The Denver Post is reporting that former junior welterweight champion Mike Alvarado was arrested on Saturday night in Denver due to an outstanding felony warrant and also for being a convicted felon who was in possession of a handgun.

The arrest comes just weeks before Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) is set to compete against Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 23 KOs) for a third time. The HBO-televised, 12-round welterweight fight is scheduled for Jan. 24 at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colo.

According to a report from the Denver Post, Alvarado’s Hummer was stopped by law enforcement during the early hours of the morning on Saturday because of expired registration tags. Police say Alvarado was then seen pushing an object into the glove box and upon searching the compartment, a handgun was found.

The report goes on to add that Alvarado posted a $41,500 bond.

Henry Delgado, Alvarado’s manager, emphasized that the arrest will not affect the upcoming bout with Rios.

"There's no problem with the fight," Delgada told the Denver Post. "As long as he's out. And he's been bailed out. The fight's only in a few weeks. I don't see that being a problem. But after that, I don't know."

This isn’t the first time Alvarado has run into trouble with the law. The 34-year-old has already served two separate stints in prison.

Rios finished the Colorado native in the seventh round of their first meeting in 2012, before dropping the immediate rematch via unanimous decision for the interim WBO world light welterweight title.
