The highly anticipated rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana on Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas now has a referee and three judges.
This will mark the fourth Mayweather fight Bayless has overseen, having served as the referee during Money’s fights against Oscar de la Hoya, Shane Mosley and Canelo Alvarez.
Some boxing fans and pundits considered the scoring during Mayweather-Maidana’s first encounter to be somewhat disproportionate. Moretti will be the only judge returning to score the rematch, making the bout his ninth Mayweather scrap altogether.
In their initial affair on May 3, Mayweather cruised to 117-111 and 116-112 marks on two judges’ scorecards. But the third judge scored the fight a draw, thus fueling the fire for an immediate rematch.
This will only be the second time Mayweather (46-0) has granted an opponent a rematch. The first being in 2002, when Jose Luis Castillo was given an immediate do-over.
