A welterweight matchup between Brandon Thatch and John Howard has been added to the UFC 189 lineup.
The pairing was announced on Wednesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight.” UFC 189 takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 11 and is headlined by a featherweight title showdown between Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo. In the evening’s co-main event, Robbie Lawler defends his welterweight strap against Rory MacDonald.
Thatch had a 10-fight winning streak halted by Benson Henderson at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 14, as he submitted to a rear-naked choke 3:58 into round four of the headlining bout. “Ruckus” has finished all 11 of his career victories, including Octagon foes Justin Edwards and Paulo Thiago, inside of one round.
Howard has lost three straight bouts within the Las Vegas-based promotion. In his most recent outing, “Doomsday” was stopped by Lorenz Larkin in the opening stanza at UFC Fight Night “McGregor vs. Siver.”
