Breaking The Law? Lindland Close to Fighting Fedor
Thursday, January 18, 2007
by Sherdog.com Staff

Say what you will about Matt Lindland (Pictures), but the 2000 Olympic Games Greco-Roman silver medalist has made the "fight anyone, anytime" mantra his.

Both Lindland and bodogFIGHT have confirmed to Sherdog.com that the Oregonian agreed in principle to face the best heavyweight mixed martial artist in the world, Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures), April 6 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

A top-flight competitor in the 185-pound division, Lindland has continually sought out tough fights since being cut from his UFC contract in the summer of 2005. Lindland (19-4-0) moved up in weight last July to fight Quinton Jackson (Pictures), losing by split decision.

Apparently fighting world-class light heavyweights wasn't enough to satiate the 36-year-old Lindland's thirst for competition. One would think Emelianenko, the popular six-foot, 230-pound PRIDE heavyweight champion who's undefeated since 2000 and is 25-1-0 (1 NC) overall, would fit the bill.

Fedor was originally scheduled to face Jeff Monson (Pictures) in March on a bodogFIGHT pay-per-view, but with the "Snowman" losing to Tim Sylvia (Pictures) late in 2006 it's rumored that the Russian champion wasn't so keen on facing him. However, according to a source in Monson's camp, the American could fight on the St. Petersburg card against Fedor's brother, Aleksander.

Lindland, who expects to sign with bodogFIGHT tonight, told Sherdog.com that he anticipates weighing around 210 pounds when he steps into the ring with the speedy Emelianenko. Prior to facing the PRIDE champion, Lindland will face Carlos Newton (Pictures) in an International Fight League middleweight super-fight on Feb. 2.
