Metamoris Pro has chosen Matheus Diniz to face Vinny Magalhaes at Metamoris 5 on Saturday.
The jiu jitsu promotion announced the decision on Wednesday. The card takes place at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif., and features a main event of Kazushi Sakuraba against Renzo Gracie.
Diniz, a brown belt under the tutelage of Marcelo Garcia, will fill the void left by Kevin Casey, who was forced to withdraw from the event because of a blood clot in his calf. If victorious, Diniz will be awarded a $10,000 prize.
“There was a lot to consider but the difference for us was Diniz's level of recent competition activity and being that his instructor is Marcelo Garcia (who he trains with daily) that's a big endorsement for his ability to perform under pressure against Vinny,” Metamoris founder Ralek Gracie said via Facebook. “Vinny tapped Galvao, Buchecha and came very "close" to catching Keenan at M4 with his infamous heel-hooks. Diniz has his work cut out for him as the underdog in this match and it's going to be very exciting to see what happens.”
Widely regarded as a top prospect in the sport of jiu jitsu, Diniz most recently won the gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 2014 International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation No-Gi World Championships.
