Former World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown is on the mend after undergoing surgery to repair a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left hand last Wednesday.
Brown suffered the injury in the first round of his Jan. 22 decision loss to Rani Yahya at UFC “Fight for the Troops 2,” according to a press release issued by Brown’s publicist.

The “Troops” event was the UFC’s second show benefitting the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides support for wounded members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. The show took place at Fort Hood near Killeen, Texas, and was attended by some 3,200 members of the military. Brown stepped in against Yahya as a late replacement for an injured Chan Sung Jung, taking the fight on only two weeks’ notice following a New Year’s Day defeat to contender Diego Nunes.
“Anytime you get a chance to fight in the UFC, it’s an honor,” said Brown, “but when you add the chance to compete in front of our troops who do so much for us, and then you couple that with my desire to get back into the cage quickly after my close loss to Diego... it was just too great of an opportunity to pass up.”
After tearing through the WEC’s ultra-competitive featherweight division in 2008 and 2009, Brown has fallen on hard times as of late, losing four of his last six fights. After relinquishing his title to Brazilian destroyer Jose Aldo at WEC 44, Brown was upset by Manny Gamburyan at WEC 48. Though he bested both Cole Province and Anthony Morrison during this current skid, Brown’s last two bouts have resulted in defeat, as he was outpointed by both Yahya and Nunes.
“I want to take some time off, step back, and come up with a new game plan, a new plan of attack,” said Brown. “I want to come back as the best version of me later this year.”
