The 15-month-old son of mixed martial artist Marcus Kowal was killed in a suspected DUI hit-and-run over the weekend in Hawthorne, California, a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles reported.

Liam Mikael Kowal was in a stroller being pushed through a crosswalk by his 15-year-old aunt when the incident occurred. He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where the family on Sunday removed him from life support, according to the report. The aunt suffered leg injuries but is reported to be in stable condition.

Donna Marie Higgins, 72, was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and felony drunk driving. According to police, witnesses followed Higgins after she left the scene. She was reportedly released on $100,000 bail but may now be charged with felony vehicular manslaughter since the child died. Charges are expected to be filed as soon as Tuesday.

Kowal has compiled a 3-1-1 record -- he suffered his only loss in Strikeforce -- as a professional mixed martial artist but has not fought since 2012. He announced via Facebook that the family plans to donate his son’s organs.

“This isn’t easy to write but Liam is going to donate his organs, so that his little heart can make another child live and another set of parents not have to go through what we have to,” he wrote. “We were told that we can donate to someone we know. Therefore, I am writing this post to ask if there is a child out there we know that needs a heart or any other organ. It hurts to write this but Liam loved to share and the person we were going to raise him to be would love to help someone else. So anyone we know, or someone you know, inbox me please.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family.
