Once-beaten heavyweight contender Shane
Carwin (pictured left) will return to the Octagon at UFC 125 on
Jan. 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Carwin on
Wednesday revealed via Twitter that he had signed his bout
agreement for the event.
No opponent has been made official, though rumors persist of a showdown with “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 10 winner Roy Nelson.
Carwin has not competed since his second-round submission loss to current heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 in July. The 35-year-old Coloradan had Lesnar on the run throughout a lopsided first round but had nothing left in the tank in round two, as he succumbed to an arm-triangle choke.
In the weeks since, Carwin has found himself in the spotlight outside the cage. In August, he was named by a U.S. attorney as one of 22 professional athletes who obtained steroids through an Alabama pharmacy.
Carwin defeated each of his first 12 opponents inside the first round. Based alongside former middleweight King of Pancrase Nate Marquardt at the Grudge Training Center in Colorado, the heavy-handed heavyweight has 22-, 29-, 31-, 44- and 49-second wins on his resume, which includes victories over former UFC heavyweight title contender Gabriel Gonzaga and former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Carwin’s ride-the-lightning punching power has turned him into one of the game’s most feared big men.
