Chad Mendes on Alexander Volkanovski’s Callout: Come Back to Me When You’re Ranked

Returning former Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight challenger Chad Mendes took on the dangerous Myles Jury on Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 133 in Boise, Idaho.

“Money,” who had not fought since his December 2015 loss to Frankie Edgar due to a two-year suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, got back to winning ways with an impressive first round TKO victory over Jury announcing to the rest of the featherweight division that he is back.

The fighter out of the Team Alpha Male gym even joked during his post-fight interview that he wanted a match with World Wrestling superstar Brock Lesnar, who was called out a week earlier at UFC 226 by Daniel Cormier after capturing the heavyweight crown.

Although earlier on the Fox Sports 1 preliminary card on Saturday night, another impressive featherweight kept his winning streak alive when Australian Alexander Volkanovski defeated Darren Elkins via unanimous decision. During the post-fight interview when the Aussie was questioned on who he’d like next, didn’t hesitate by calling out Mendes.

Volkanovski who has taken exception to Mendes told reporters “I don’t like that sort of sh*t” in reference to the wrestler being suspended for two years for allegedly taking performance enhancing drugs.

When Mendes was asked about the callout he didn’t think it was a worthwhile fight given the Australian is unranked (via MMAJunkie.com):

“That guy’s not even ranked. That doesn’t make sense for me. He did just beat a teammate. If they put him high enough in the rankings, I’d love to knock that dude out. … It’s up to the UFC. That was a quick fight for me, and if they want to give me something in a few months or towards the end of the year, I think my managers are going to negotiate with them soon. We’ll see what they think. I’m game for anything.”

After his fight, Mendes told the media that the win over Jury puts him back in the mix at featherweight and that he belongs in the top three of the division.

Volkanovski, who was unranked before the fight with Elkins will most likely crack the top ten of the official UFC featherweight rankings as Elkins was the 10th ranked UFC featherweight.
