Chael Sonnen Says Henry Cejudo Needs to Be the Bad Guy to Promote Rematch with ‘Mighty Mouse’

Undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight champion Demetrius Johnson is set to face Henry Cejudo for the title at UFC 227 on Aug. 4.

The pair previously met back in April 2016 at UFC 197, when “Mighty Mouse” outclassed his opponent winning by TKO in the first round.

Since their fight, Cejudo suffered another defeat at the hands of Joseph Benavidez before bouncing back with two victories against Wilson Reis and most recently rising flyweight Sergio Pettis back in December.

Johnson has gone from strength to strength with three straight victories over Tim Elliott, Wilson Reis and Ray Borg, while also breaking the UFC record for most consecutive title defenses (11).

Cejudo, who is usually a reserved fighter had been campaigning for this fight to happen even uncharacteristically trying to get under the skin of the champion by tweeting how poor his pay-per-view ratings compared to other champions and even took a swipe at Mighty Mouse’s side business as a video game streamer.

Chael Sonnen, who is no stranger to the trash-talk game posted a video on his YouTube channel on the upcoming fight, believing Cejudo should continue to antagonise the champion to build interest in the fight (via BJPenn.com):

“I worry as a fan that that was his goal, and his only goal: to get the fight. I worry as a fan that he’s not going to do his part to bring attention to this. That’s irresponsible of him. He will think it’s sportsmanlike of him, he will see it as sportsmanship. That’s also why he’s broke. He just refuses to see what we’re doing here. This is a world title fight, which is a big deal. This is a rematch which historically speaking, is big business — and it’s the co-main, which is the industry’s way of saying ‘we know you can’t do your part.’ That’s not on Demetrious. A little bit of it is. Demetrious is involved in this too, but he’s the champion. He’s the one that gets to be himself. He’s the one that gets to be in that spot because he’s got 12 pounds of gold wrapped around his waist. He’s the guy who gets that opportunity, because he’s the number-one ranked fighter in the world. It’s incumbent on the challenger, and in this case, it’s Cejudo.”
