The UFC 173 bill is now without a co-main event, as Ultimate Fighting Championship officials announced Thursday that Chael Sonnen’s light heavyweight clash with Wanderlei Silva has been pushed back by a week and will now headline a May 31 show in Brazil.
UFC 173 takes place May 24 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a middleweight title showdown pitting reigning champion Chris Weidman against ex-light heavyweight ruler Vitor Belfort.
Sonnen and Silva are currently serving as coaches on the third season of “TUF: Brazil,” reportedly squaring off in an unsanctioned physical altercation outside the cage during taping. Sonnen, 36, last competed on Nov. 16, when he suffered a first-round technical knockout to Rashad Evans at UFC 167. Silva, meanwhile, has not competed since last March, when he knocked out Brian Stann in a “Fight of the Year” nominee at UFC on Fuel TV 8.
