Charges Against Thomas Dropped
Prosecutors in Fort Pierce, Fla., opted against filing felony
charges on Din Thomas
(Pictures) Friday for organizing an
"illegal cage fighting" event.
The 31-year-old lightweight from Port St. Lucie, Fla., was arrested on Halloween after police alleged Thomas, whose last fight came in the UFC, operated unregulated fights in a warehouse on Oct. 19 that drew more than 150 spectators.
Because Thomas' American Top Team students were fighting, and the purpose of their experience was to learn, Assistant State Attorney Jeff Hendricks told the Palm Beach Post, the prosecution felt the fighter's attorney would have been granted a motion to dismiss based on an exception to the "prohibited competitions" statute for training.
Thomas (20-7) is currently rehabbing a surgically-repaired knee he injured during his last fight versus Kenny Florian (Pictures). The Floridian expects to return in early 2008.
