To no one's surprise, Colby Covington has an opinion on the post-UFC 229 fracas, and expressed it bluntly. It had been a quiet few weeks on social media for the former Ultimate Fighting Championship interim welterweight champion, who is usually quite vocal about goings-on in the sport.
The 30-year-old commented on the pandemonium that ensued after this weekend’s UFC 229 main event, when Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Conor McGregor via fourth-round submission, then threw his mouth piece down and jumped into the crowd to confront McGregor’s jiu-jitsu training partner, Bellator MMA fighter Dillon Danis.
“Chaos” blasted Nurmagomedov for his part in sparking an all-in brawl and didn’t hold back on Twitter.
“[Khabib Nurmagomedov] is a filthy animal,” Covingto tweeted. “Way to set the sport back 20 years you stupid sheep f*cker.”
The brawl led to three of Nurmagomedov’s teammates being arrested for their part, but they were later released when McGregor refused to press charges. However, in the immediate aftermath, UFC President Dana White said if any of the men arrested were UFC fighters, their contracts would be cut.
It is believed two of the men who entered the cage are under contract with the promotion: Islam Makhachev and Zubaira Tukhugov. Tukhugov was scheduled to meet McGregor’s Russian-born teammate Artem Lobov -- another central figure in the bad blood between the two camps -- at UFC Moncton on Oct. 27.
Covington is currently waiting to hear whether he’ll get the next title shot against welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who is sidelined with a hand injury he suffered in last month’s title defense against Darren Till.
