Colby Covington: ‘Fraud’ Tyron Woodley Trying to Leverage UFC for One Last ‘Money Fight’

In a logical world, the winner of the interim welterweight title bout between Colby Covington and Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225 would be in line to face reigning champion Tyron Woodley late in 2018.

MMA often defies logic, however, and Colby Covington wouldn’t be surprised if Woodley fails to defend the belt should he defeat dos Anjos on Saturday.

“To be honest I’m not that confident about it. He’s been running from me from the gate. We were supposed to fight December last year. He said he could fight Nate Diaz, but all of a sudden when he got presented me he got hurt again,” Covington said during a recent media call. “I don’t know, he’s been acting, he’s on TMZ. He needs to come back and fight but he’s probably gonna run to Hollywood. He needs to vacate the belt for me.”

Woodley hasn’t competed since taking a unanimous decision over Demian Maia at UFC 214 last July. He underwent shoulder surgery after a rumored bout against Diaz at UFC 219 didn’t come to fruition and has been on the mend since then.

Covington, who has won five in a row and eight of nine UFC appearances overall, questions whether Woodley is really even interested in fighting anymore.

“To be honest, I don’t think so. The guy he comes out in the media and will say something on his social media to make headlines,” Covington said. “The guy doesn’t want to fight. He’s a fake, he’s a fraud.…He doesn’t want to fight anymore.

“He’s just trying to leverage the UFC to get one more money fight and get out of the game. I’m here to make this division great again and knock them all down one by one.”

With that in mind, the American Top Team representative known as “Chaos” disputes the “interim” label assigned to his fight with dos Anjos at UFC 225.

“This is the undisputed title,” Covington said. “I don’t know what you keep saying about the interim title, everybody knows this is the undisputed belt. You don’t get any bigger fights in the UFC, in the division, than you have right now.”
