Conor McGregor: I Put My Name Forward to Fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222

This week, it was reported that Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight king Conor McGregor was negotiating to fight twice in the Octagon before 2018 was over. Well, if the champion is to be believed, we might not need to wait that long.

On Thursday, “The Notorious” stated via Instagram that he was ready and willing to step in to face Frankie Edgar at UFC 222, scheduled for March 3 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Edgar was originally scheduled to challenge UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway in the event’s headliner before the Hawaiian pulled out on Feb. 3 due to a leg injury.

“I am fighting again. Period. I am the best at this,” wrote McGregor. “I put my name forward to step in at UFC 222 to face Frankie Edgar when Max Holloway pulled out, but I was told there wasn't enough time to generate the money that the UFC would need.”

In the wake of the Holloway-Edgar title fight being scrapped, UFC 222 is now set to be headlined by Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino’s women's featherweight title defense against former Invicta Fighting Championships titlist Yana Kunitskaya.

“I was excited about bouncing in last minute and taking out the final featherweight, without all the rest of the stuff that comes with this game,” McGregor continued. “Please respect the insane amount of work outside the fight game that I have put in. On top of the fighting. I am here. It is on them to come and get me. Because I am here. Yours sincerely, The Champ Champ™.”

McGregor captured the UFC featherweight title at UFC 194 in December 2015, knocking out Brazilian legend Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds. McGregor never defended his crown, instead splitting a pair of bouts with Nate Diaz, then knocking out Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016, becoming the first fighter to hold two UFC titles simultaneously.

Just two weeks after the Alvarez win, McGregor vacated the 145-pound title, having never defended it. Since capturing the lightweight crown, McGregor has not set foot in the Octagon or defended that title, either, instead opting to box Floyd Mayweather this past August in their historic “Money Fight,” in which the SBG Ireland product was knocked out in the 10th round.

McGregor’s social media blast comes just hours after TMZ Sports posted a video interview with UFC President Dana White in which the promotion’s frontman questioned whether or not McGregor would ever return to the cage, period.

“Conor made a lot of money, he wants some time off, but the division has to go on and the business has to go on,” said White. “I say it all the time, with that kind of money, Conor might never come back. It’s a lot of money.”
